Steam takes sooo long to boot

Hi guys. I’ve been having a problem lately where Steam literally takes about 20 MINUTES to boot. Is this because I don’t have an ssd? Or is it maybe caused by something else? Please help me I’m so frustrated.

How full is the hdd steam is on? Is the drive fragmented to hell or relatively defragged? A ssd would be quicker but 20 min is quite extreme, sounds like more major issues, what are pc specs?

The HDD is a 500-gb, probably a fifth of it is being used up, it’s really not fragmented barely at all.

Here's the specs.

  • CPU
    AMD Athlon II X4 650
  • Motherboard
    N-Alvorix-RS880-uATX (Alvorix)
  • RAM
    8GB DDR3
  • GPU
    MSI Radeon R9 380 Gaming 4G
  • Case
    Some crap hp thing
  • Storage
HGST 500GB 2.5 inch SATA Drive (pulled from a PS4)

(Forget the GPU is there, I can’t use it with this system yet.)

2.5" HDDs tend to run at 5400 rpm so yeah a ssd should help a bit, at least make things more usable until you upgrade the rest of the system

It's your operating system. I can 100% tell you are on some variants of windows. Clean install that thing.

Ok yeah I’m running windows 7 home premium. I’ve been dreading it but I think I’ll have to upgrade to Windows 10

How long have you had the harddrive for? Your HDD might be starting to fail and this is generally an indicator.

I don’t actually know how old the drive is. I bought a refurbished PS4 from GameStop and I pulled that drive out of it. Swapped it for a 2tb Firecuda SSHD. If I bought another firecuda, would that get rid of the need for an ssd?

Considering what price they are, you are better off just getting 500gb/1tb SSD. Even 500gb SSD will be enough for you OS, games and other software.
