Strix Z390-I reaching 65C for Motherboard Temp

I have a Corsair 280x with a Thermal Take Floe Riing 240 as the exhaust, 2 stock corsair fans as the intake, i5 9600k at stock clock, the 3 fan non OC strix 2080, and during 4K gaming, specifically Vermintide 2 and BFV, the board keeps going over 55C and sometimes hitting 65C. 

 

I do not understand, the case is set up for its designed airflow, and my CPU hardly ever goes over 52, unless I overclock which even then it only hit 75 when pushed to 5ghz. OC has been removed until MB temp settles. 

The only thing I can think of is the fans on top are pulling the hot air from the GPU, which hits 80C in 4K, and hitting the MB sensor. 

 

Asus support has been useless, I dont know where the sensor is or what to do to get the temps to drop. 

It idles at 40C, the temp reading are coming directly from the bios, and when in windows I use HWMonitor or AI Suite. 

 

Can anyone help me out?

Vrms at 70+ are fine. Don't worry about it.

Thats what worries me, Asus wont tell me where the sensors are or what the sensor is for, and they said safe operating temps are up to 50C. Plus the Bios has the temp in that red color they use when its "too high". 

 

HWMonitor has it listed as TMPTIN2 

 

This board is supposed to be for OCing a 9900K so I figure an i5 wouldnt do anything to make it sweat.

Thats true I assumed you had a overclocked cpu in there. 

 

I would try placing a spare fan over the vrms and see if there is a noticeable diffrence

That's fine, case ambient temps and VRM temps are always higher with AIO's, this is due to the fact that there is no fan around the CPU socket area to promote airflow through that area. The case can't promote airflow over those areas, this is one reason why I personally stick to air coolers whenever possible. 

 

Cryorig and now Asus have fixed this problem with their AIO's by placing a small fan over the pump, but you have nothing to worry about your temps aren't dangerous. 

 

EDIT: I noticed you want to get a 9900k down the road, so you may have some thermal limitations. And ITX motherboards tend to always have more thermal limitations to begin with, I wouldn't expect to really be able to OC the 9900k with your current configuration.

VRM temps are generally safe up to ~100C

So should I ignore what Asus support told me, and the red temp color in the bios? I get the feeling they are just customer service reps with spec sheets and dont have any real technical knowledge. 

 

Im just worried the sensor isn't for the VRM's, but at the same time I cant think of what else it would be for.

Yeah I wouldn't be concerned, I've had many ITX motherboards over the years all systems have been OC'd on Asus motherboards and I haven't had VRM issues to date. And in my experience service reps tend to be kinda dumb.

well, the board is asus, and its z390. what did you expect?

 

anyways, the board has a pretty bad vrm heatsink (its tiny. 80% of the volume is the hollow io shroud) also, its only a 6 3 phase (for cpu) (with double the mosfets and inductors), and the 280x doesn't have the best airflow, and you are using an AIO which doesn't have much vrm cooling. 70c is perfectly fine, all things considered, and the amount of heat that is dissipated will increase with the temperature. Like what others mentioned, if you are really worried, I'd get a 80mm or 92mm fan, and just ghetto rig it on top of the vrm heatsink, or over the cpu block (it will flow to the vrms)

See, the irony of this is I got this board because GN listed it as having better VRMs, but oh well, maybe I should have gone a different route. 

 

The case was just pretty and I do plan to put a custom loop in it, just didn't wanna spend the extra cash on the materials just yet.
