Is My Graphics Card Getting Enough Power?

avrona

So my PSU wasn't really built for 2 8 pin graphic cards like the 1080 Ti I have now. Probably because 2 8 pin cards didn't even exist when it was made. My PSU only comes with 1 8 pin, a 6+2. So instead I use an adaptor that converts 2 6 pins into 1 8 pin, so I use that for the other 8 pin slot. However, my PSU only has 1 6 pin, meaning I could one use up one of those 6 pin slots in that adaptor. Is that bad or is my graphics card ok? I've had it since October and had no issues thus far.

if your PSU is that old, you really should upgrade it. Its likely a ticking time bomb at this point being old enough like that. You can get decent cheap units like the 50$ range that will have the connections you need.

Even that's too much for me though. I don't have the money to even upgrade that.

Then it needs to be a priority to save up for it and replace it.

You can't afford a $70 PSU, but a 1080 Ti, that's cheap as chips

Shouldn't have bought a GTX 1080 Ti then if you can't afford what it requires to run.

If you force it to work off an unfit-able Power Supply there are great chances it will result in the loss of both hardware.

I agree with @Skiiwee29, a PSU that old should be replaced sooner than later, it is probably on its last leg and may take some other components with it on it's way out...

Well get a 2x molex --> pcie6 adapter to get that missing 6pin. But be sure to plug those molex connectors in properly as they are shit.

Do I need it though? I mean my card is doing fine with just 1 6 pin.

Seriously, if you got a 1080 Ti for free at least invest on proper power feeding, losing the high end GPU in a few months to save 70ish dollars like stated ain't worth it.

No I created it because I wanted to know if there was some issue with my setup or not, as it's been running fine so far, even with GPU heavy tasks such as 4k gaming or mining. And again, I simply don't have the money for a new PSU.

You do really need both cable slots to be filled. So 1 cable instead of 2 is not enough.

You risk overdrawing the PSU and damaging it. It can also cause other components to not get enough power or deal with erratic power from an overloaded PSU, so unrelated things may also start to act up. Better quality PSU's are probably going to be more robust than lower quality cheap OEM provided ones.

A video card or other component may say it needs a 550w power supply, and it probably does only when fully loaded. So you may not experience problems on power on, but only after playing a game or something else that stresses the GPU.

Specific symptoms include:

  • lockups
  • BSODs
  • graphical corruption
  • display goes black

Well I am using a 550w power supply which came in my pre-built, and I've been having no issues. Well apart from BSODs for a few days but that was from damaged Windows files. And sadly even if the risk is as bad as you say, I don't really have a way to solve it, as I don't have the money for a new PSU.

I'm assuming fixed income, like disability?  Maybe join a local PC forum or club and see if you can get a used PSU for super cheap.

Or get a PSU in the same fashion you got the 1080Ti?

No nothing like that, I don't have fixed income or disability. Plus the odds of winning another giveaway are pretty slim.

Why? Most 8pins only have one ground wire more and sense. On some(old) psu:s there can be only 2x 12V wires in a 6-pin.
