I would like to transfer data from an old spectrometer to my pc. It's a few 100 numbers generated over the course of a few minutes.
The spectrometer has a parallel output, in the manual it says it's possible to transfer data through it to a PC.

I bought this USB to serial adapter and dowloaded a terminal.

However it seems that I'm unable to receive data. I don't know a lot about computers and I'm probably doing something wrong but it seems like the terminal finds the port.
When I do a measurement with the spectrometer it doesn't transfer to the terminal. I do get an output when connecting and disconnecting the cable from the spectrometer ('nul' or '0').

It would be amazing if someone could help me

Does the manual say what speed the serial-port should be? I would hazard a guess that it outputs a 9600bps signal, but you need to scour the manual to see if it's mentioned anywhere.

A USB to serial cable can do 19200 baud no issue. I am thinking there is more of a setting issue here.

Be sure to @Pickles von Brine if you want me to see your reply!

I also asked on another forum. They found that the cable is costum made by manufacturer. With other words , manufacterer changed pin layout so you can only use their cable. That's how they can sell it for that much money. I can't find pin layout on the internet otherwise it'd be possible to change it. Guess I have to buy the cable, get a serial input for my computer and hope it works.

Still thanks for your comments

Yea.  it is most likely a com port settings issue.  You would need to find out what port speed and flow control is needed from that device, and configure the USB serial adapter port to match.  The software would also need to be configured to use the same settings.  Serial is not PNP.

No like I said, it's not a standard cable, they changed the pin layout. However it says that it is possible to use a standard parallel cable to connect it with a standard parallel printer.
I know how to adjust the settings it just won't transfer data because the company is fucked and changed pin layout so you have to use their cable.
