hey hey hey internet people (if this was a youtube video, comments: HEY IS FOR HORSEs)

So, quick question. Already posted this:

Got most of the hardware answers I needed, so now I'm hoping to pick the best OS for the build.

Thanks for the support anyone can offer.

Free NAS

That's what I was thinking. IK UnRaid costs money, but I could absorb it. Do you support that?

what about CentOS

and finally what about other Linux distros?

If you have no problem using google to figure out how to use other Linux OS's, sure.  UnRAID is a decent option, but its not worth the price for a small server AFAIK.  Its only worth it if you also need a hypervisor or its other more advanced features.

K. So probally FreeNAS. What do you think on CentOS? IK 45Drives does sell it as an option in their servers, so just asking

I used Centos on most of my server projects, ubuntu if the client specify it.

Depends on what server you want to build.

For a web server, centos and ubuntu is great.

But for NAS you can build one with Freenas.

Or you can just use Centos with Samba installed.

What are you doing on your server? Are you running vms? How much do you want to mess around on here vs plug and play? Freenas will work fine, but isn't great for vms, and your tied to zfs. If you go with something like centos or ubuntu or windows you can make it much more flexable, but you need to do more config work to get it started.

Also what hardware? Do you want easy storage upgrades?

Check the sister thread in the OP to answer these questions.

I like Ubuntu Server personally. I'm not super knowledgeable when it comes Linux and servers so all the community support out there goes a long way.

Ubuntu + webmin = ready to use webserver in less than 1 hour.

All you do is just wget and install.sh

He basically wants a small file server. So he could run whatever basically. LOL Even an old OS/2 setup :) That could actually be cool for nostalgic reasons :)
