6-pin and 8-pin

Evolutiioz

For my new build, I'm going with a Gigabyte RTX 2070. It has 1x 8-pin power connector and 1x 6-pin power connector. Can I plug a 6-pin connector into an 8-pin connector on my PSU, or do I need to buy an adapter?

CPU | Ryzen 7 3700x        GPU | MSI Gaming X Trio RTX 2070 Super       Motherboard | MSI MPG X570 Gaming Edge Wifi

Cooler | NZXT Kraken x62       Memory | 16GB (2x8GB) GSkill TridentZ RGB @3200MHz       Case | Phanteks Eclipse P400S TGE

Storage | 2TB Seagate Barracude + 500GB Samsung 970 Evo Plus NVMe SSD       Power Supply | 750W Seasonic Focus Plus Gold

If your PSU doesnt have an 8pin (6+2) PCIe connector, then you need a new PSU.

What model is it?

CPU: Intel i7 6700k  | Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170x Gaming 5 | RAM: 2x16GB 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX | GPU: Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080ti | PSU: Corsair RM750x (2018) | Case: BeQuiet SilentBase 800 | Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34 eSports | SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 500GB + Samsung 840 500GB + Crucial MX500 2TB | Monitor: Acer Predator XB271HU + Samsung BX2450

That PSU should come with 2 cables that have 2x 6+2 connectors on each cable. You clip the 6+2 connectors together to make the 8pin. For the 6 pin connector you just use the 6pin and leave the +2 bit hanging off the side. They're designed as 6+2 so that you can use them in either a 6pin or 8pin connector on the graphics card.

I'm going to buy a set of cable extensions from cablemod, do you know if they come with the 6+2 config?

If you get the pre-made cable kits then it should be the 6+2 type AFAIK, but if you custom make it then it will be whatever you order.

@CableMod can help you with support.

If you only need them for the GPU then you will need one 8 pin and one 6 pin.

@Evolutiioz the 6+2 PCI-E cables will provide better future compatibility, but otherwise you can just go with the 6-pin PCI-E and 8-pin PCI-E if you don't change GPUs often.

Used your configurator and I will order an 8-pin (6 + 2) and an 8-pin (standard), alongside a 24-pin ATX and 8-pin EPS when i go ahead with the build
