I'm assuming you plugged it into a SATA III port? Not SATA II?

So you plugged this in the normal drive bay? I think your limited by the old sas  or sata controller(depends on options). Get a pcie to sata adapter and you can get full speed.

i downloaded amorphousdiskmark as crystal doesn't exist for mac but it gave me almost the same results. thus i think its the sas bay but i am fine with this for now as i only use it for transferring files (usually over a slow network) and hosting a Minecraft server. i would like to upgrade this in the future as right now im only using one of the 2 16x slots in my 1u server but a $50 card isn't the highest of my priorities as cpus that are a 3.3GH vs my 2.3GH processors is kinda more what i want for my blender rendering. Thanks :)

If you want faster blender rendering, get a gpu, it will be much faster than those cpus. You can take the top off or run a external gpu.

the build was mostly about getting bang for the buck. the server was $200, $20 for the ssd, and another $40 for a used gt730. if i were making a proper workstation or anything sensible then i would have got ether a 09-12 mac pro or cheep but powerful used pc and stuffed a good GPU in it. :)

Edit: the reason i went with a gt730 is the pci slot in xserves i limited to 25w for some stupid reason, it has kinda native support within macOS, i wanted some performance but most work i was doing is cpu based, and i wanted something that would fit. I wanted all this on the cheep i didn't pick this card for performance only for compatibility.
