Hey everyone, I'm planning on building a server for my home that I can host game servers on, like CS:GO and Minecraft. I am very new to the whole idea of home-servers and have never built one on my own, so I'm looking for some confirmation on my build choice.

CPU: 2x E5-2650 v1

Motherboard: ASRock EP2C602-4L/D16 SSI EEB

RAM: 128GB RAM (Didn't display on the website: https://natex.us/asrock-ep2c602-4l-d16/)

PSU: eVGA Bronze 750w SuperNova

Heatsink: 2x CoolerMaster Evo 212

Storage: 4x Seagate BarraCuda Intenal Hard Drive 2TB SATA 3.5 Inch

Case: Phanteks Enthoo Luxe

I also have to get this VGA > HDMI adapter. https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Converter-Adapter-Support/dp/B00IDFGK1W/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_23_tr_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=X10SHJAPMR5TBQBZHV71

Price: $1,365.94 USD

I plan on installing Debian to the system (as it's what I'm most used to in the Linux field).

If anyone has any tips and/or ideas for changing my build around or software it would help a lot, thx a bunch. BTW this is supposed to be overkill for just gameservers, I plan on running multiple processes including a web server at a single time.

IF your sure to go the Xeon way then things look good except you need a SSD which I don't know if you have or not.  Also the PSU is the heart and soul next to mobo and you want a good one. Bronze rating for a server with ECC RAM isn't any good.  Try Gold rating.  Also you didn't say which video card your getting ?

For game servers, they often want higher single threaded speed, So id be temped to go with a single ryzen chip. That would also use much less power and be almost as fast in multithreaded uses. Id look at a 2700 or 1700

Also look into using a hypervisor to run all the servers in their own vm, makes managing much easier and makes it more secure. Look at something like proxmox on the host.

Id get bigger hdds like 8tb models, then add more as needed, cheaper per gb, and faster. Look at those 8tb external drives and take the drive out of them.

Alright taking into consideration in what you all suggested...

I am pretty sure I'm going with Xeon. I do however think single threaded speed is important, so I've decided on the Intel Xeon E5-2660 v2 2.2GHz 25MB Cache 10-Core Processor.

I've also went with this Motherboard now: SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SRL-F Server Motherboard LGA 2011 R3

I really need suggestions for RAM. The place I was going to buy the RAM from featured it in a bundle. This MoBo says it only supports

2400 / 2133 / 1866 / 1600 MHz ECC DDR4 SDRAM 72-bit, 288-pin (RDIMM / LRDIMM) / 284-pin gold-plated DIMMs
So if someone can find me some RAM that supports that^, that would be wonderful. Before I had 128Gb for around $250 I believe, and I couldn't find anything even coming close to that.

Since I value speed higher than capacity with a gaming server I've decided to go with a single WD Gold 4TB. From what I've read, it's one of the best Hard Drives (I didnt go with SSD because of price) compared with price to speed (and warranty for the future). Since it's just going to be used for game servers, I'm not too worried about storage and I think 4Tb will be enough for a while and I'll be ready for expanding.

PSU Changed to the Cooler Master MWE Gold 750 Watt Fully Modular Power Supply.

Video Card I planned on is the PNY Quadro P600 VCQP600-PB 2GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 Low Profile Video Cards, mostly because I'll be doing very little video rendering or anything like that, so I don't see any need in getting anything too expensive.

I've heard of hypervisors before and I like the idea of it, so I'll look more into it. Proxmox also appeals to me.

Thx for the support I'll keep looking into it.
