New Build, same old SSD

Go to solution Solved by Enderman,

That process is crap and you shouldn't do it.

It is NOT the same as a clean install.

You'll run into issues in the future, especially since the hardware is changing on the new build.

Just make an installation USB using the official microsoft tool, it doesn't have to be with the same computer.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10

Then follow the steps to clean install:

https://www.howtogeek.com/224342/how-to-clean-install-windows-10/

Also if the motherboard is not going to be the same you need to do this FIRST in order to activate windows later:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/20530/windows-10-reactivating-after-hardware-change

Or you can use your old windows 7 key to activate it again, yes this method also works still. Windows 7 keys still activate windows 10.

I had a questions, I hope this is the right spot for it.

I am doing a new build and I am running into a situation I haven't seen.

When I put this computer together, Windows 7 was new. I had the disc, installed, and eventually did the free upgrade to windows 10.

I want to clear the Boot drive and have a fress system for the new drivers. Windows has a feature that allows you to keep the OS and it'll wipe the rest (Same process Linus did in the Harddrive wiping key, just selecting the Keep the OS option.) If I do this process will it revert me to Windows 7 or will it keep me on 10?

I don't have a usb boot drive just yet but I thought this would be an easier option.

Thanks guys!

If you reset windows 10 it will still be there, just without anything installed.

Your files in /users/username will be preserved, but you need to install all programs.

You need a usb drive to use the installer package.

This does sound good. Everything int he computer will be new except my boot drive and my partitioned drives. I will order my USB drive and get ready to do a full clean instal.

Thank you!
