I need a new motherboard

I've been looking for a massive overhaul of my PC, mainly the motherboard, CPU and RAM. I'm currently running a DDR3 Gigabyte board, with an i5 6600, and 4 x 4GB Ballistix Sport RAM. The main thing I was going to do was upgrade my CPU, however I can't go any higher than a 6000 series on my current motherboard. I'm planning on getting an i7 9700k, potentially 8700k or i5 9700k. I'm not exactly sure what RAM I would get, although I know it's going to be 16GB. The only thing I haven't been able to find is a good motherboard. A google search has come up with basically nothing, and I'm sure your experience is much more helpful than an article. Thanks!

What's your budget and location? And are you buying a 9th gen CPU or an 8th gen one (this might help you save money)?

Ryzen is a good choice, although I was kind of expecting to just buy the motherboard and RAM, use my current CPU for a little bit and save to get the best I can.

Then why not just wait and see how good ryzen 3000 series is. Ryzen 3000 series might be the best you can get once it releases so might as well wait and see and save up money in the meantime so that when reviews come out you can choose if you still want Intel or if you want the new ryzen cpus.

Gigabyte really stepped up their game on their Z390 motherboards -- especially in the VRM design + cooling department.

I grabbed a Z390 Arous Master just last week, to pair with my i7-8086K.

(This is coming from a guy who mainly uses ASUS ROG boards...ASUS went backwards with Z390)

Z390 Arous Elite and Z390 Arous Pro are both ~$179 at the moment.

It's always smarter to buy all of your computer hardware together rather than in parts because the tech industry changes. It would suck if you bought things in parts and by the time you bought all of them there is a much better alternative that you could have bought instead had you saved and bought all at once rather than in pieces. You aren't going to save any faster if you buy it all at once vs in pieces so it really can only hurt you.

Your i5 6600 is not compatible with a z390 board. You'll have to buy a new CPU anyways. Might as well consider Ryzen afterall... AMD actually supports CPU upgrades. Check this out:

https://forums.guru3d.com/threads/z390-boards-do-they-support-old-cpus.423234/

Also you won't see any improvements in gaming performance depending on which Ryzen CPU you go with (if you go with Ryzen right now). Ryzen is comparable to skylake in single thread performance. Might as well drop a fortune on 9700k/9900k + z370/z390 mobo now or wait to see what 7nm Ryzen has to offer in 4-5 months or so.

Also, you said you have ddr3 in a z170 motherboard... I doubt that. To my knowledge all z170 boards utilize ddr4 unless there is some weird exception.

EDIT:

Looks like I was wrong about z170 not supporting ddr3. There is an exception:

https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-Z170-HD3-DDR3-rev-10#ov

I guess you own the exception.
