Hey, so I'm thinking of getting a Gigabyte GA-X99 SLI motherboard for my Xeon E5 2696 v4, but since the processor is broadwell and the motherboard is generally made for older CPUs, I think I'll need to change the BIOS.

I don't have enough money to get a new CPU just to change the BIOS, plus it would be ridiculous to waste another 200$ over the 4000 I payed for this processor and then let it sit and gather dust. So I settled on the idea of manually getting a BIOS chip off eBay or something and replace it.

So my question is...

Is this motherboard's BIOS soldered onto the board or is it a removable one? And if it is, then is this even worth doing? Like, I don't want to blow 4000 bucks because of some faulty BIOS chip I picked up off eBay for 10. Thanks!

You can update the BIOS by writing a new BIOS to it through the BIOS itself, this is a function included in all modern motherboards. No need for swapping BIOS chips. Only do that when you broke or corrupted the BIOS chip and cant reflash it on the board itself.

If you were already willing to put $4,000 into a CPU like that just buy an appropriate server motherboard from someone like Supermicro. No reason to hack a desktop motherboard.

Edit:

Here. I don't know what your exact requirements are but consider something like the X10SRi-F It's around $275 and has native support for the E5-2600 v4 family (BIOS update may be required).

Thanks! These motherboards go upwards of 500$ where I live, and ordering them isn't an option because Amazon doesn't have any that ship here and I don't trust the eBay sellers.
