GPU won't clock down all the way on idle

martward

Hi all,

I noticed today that my GPU isn't throttling down to 300MHz anymore when utilization is low. It's a 2060 so it should have a baseclock of 1365MHz and it's now going to 1215MHz but not any lower, even if utilization is 0%.

It did clock lower before. Some things I have done since the last time I saw it going down to 300MHz are:

- Installed new drivers

- Tweaked the color settings of one of my displays through the nvidia control panel to reduce ghosting effects

- Switched between 60, 100, 120 and 144Hz multiple times while tweaking the settings.

- Set the power management in nvidia control panel to adaptive (though this was after I saw it didn't clock down all the way.

It will return to lower clock speeds if I alter the frequency of the monitor.

My issue with this is that I'm running +5C (40C) on idle now from before and I'm not sure what kind of effect this will have on longevity.

Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers

I had a similar problem quite often with my 7950 before, and the method that almost always fixed it was taking it out, booting my system up and shutting it down, and then putting it back in.

Also unless your GPU is constantly in the 85+ range, the hit to its life is incredibly negligible to non-existent.

I don't have an iGPU so booting it without the gpu and then shutting down is quite difficult.

Nah it doesn't go over 40C so it should be fine then, also I have a rather aggressive fan curve set.

Won't really matter if your PC will boot into Windows without a GPU and also have the power button set in Windows to just turn off when you hit it. I had the iGPU on my CPU disabled and this method worked a-ok.

Turing seems to do that often - all 3 of my Titans often will only throttle down to 1350 Mhz randomly. Sometimes putting a load on them and then stopping it will get them to drop down to 300 Mhz at idle, sometimes not. TBH I don't think it is anything to worry about.
