First PC Build In 5 Years - Your Thoughts?

JeffTutorialsYT

Hey people, so I just finalized my part list for my new PC build. I currently have a i7-3770k which has served me well over the years, but is clearly starting to show it's age.

I want to go for a durable, dependable PC that will last me another 5+ years since I will be doing heavy gaming & moderate video editing on the daily basis. Let me know your thoughts of if I should change anything out that may be more reliable or better for the price. My budget is ~$2000

(The only thing i'm transferring over is my current GTX1070)

All opinions are welcome. I won't judge :)

Not really in the mood for a AMD vs Intel debate right now, but I think Intel CPUs play better with Adobe Premiere. I could be wrong however.

Are you sure you don't want a blazing fast NVME drive instead of that 2TB SSD ? (Or to go alongside it, keep the SSD for your games for example and just get a small 128GB NVME drive for OS?)

... It is NVME right? The terms change so often that I'm lost at this point... Was it M.2 PCI-e?  .... Ughh..

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x / GPU: Asus Radeon RX 6750XT OC 12GB / RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4-3200
MOBO: MSI B450m Gaming Plus / NVME: Corsair MP510 240GB / Case: TT Core v21 / PSU: Seasonic 750W / OS: Win 10 Pro

If you can wait a couple months I would go with something within the Ryzen 3000 series. There are some significant IPC improvements and increased core count should help greatly in both gaming and adobe premiere. The pricing structure will also help you save a good chunk of change you could use to get an NVME for your OS.

Good point. I will keep that in mind. Thanks :)

My changes would be:

  • 9700k instead of 9900k, for editing cores matter more than threads and both have 8
  • H100i V2 or a Noctua NH-D15, Corsair's "PRO" series has a high failure rate and performs worse than the previous V2.
  • ASUS Mobo
  • RAM is just OK but know you'll paying around $50 more just because of LEDs, a ripoff if you ask me.
  • If you really need an SSD that large you could go for an nVME m.2 Intel drive like the 600P which is fast and will definitely resist better the r/w cycles from video edition than the Samsung --- Crucial or Sandisk are decent brands too.
  • Power supply: a 650 watt G2 or any other 650W Tier 1 PSU, 850W is overkill for a single graphics card configuration

fans are also kind of a ripoff but it's your cash dude

ASUS X470-PRO • R7 1700 4GHz • Corsair H110i GT P/P • 2x MSI RX 480 8G • Corsair DP 2x8 @3466 • EVGA 750 G2 • Corsair 730T • Crucial MX500 250GB • WD 4TB

Even though you said you were going to transfer the GTX 1070 over, for $2000 you can get a build with an RTX 2080.

i7-9700K because it's cheaper than the 9900K and there's no change in cores. Like @aezakmi said, for video editing cores matter more than threads.

I've chosen 32GB of GeIL EVO SPEAR RAM as it offers good value for money.

In terms of storage I've chosen a Crucial P1 500GB for a boot drive and an Intel 660p 1TB for storage. The 660p should hold up better than most SSDs when editing (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).

GPU-wise I've gone for an EVGA RTX 2080 Black 8GB. It's a great card for the money.

For the case, I've chosen a Fractal Design Meshify C with a tempered glass side window.

The power supply is a BitFenix Formula 650W which should power the system quite nicely.

Because Threadripper-based systems are unnecessarily expensive and are bad value for money in this case.

IMO Zen 2 would be the ideal option but Z390 should do the job just fine.

IPC rate is lower and needs faster memory, plus it's not that good for gaming which is what OP will mainly do.

The difference between the 3700k and the 9600k will be really noticeable

If he/she were doing just gaming a standard Ryzen 2700 would be enough.

ASUS X470-PRO • R7 1700 4GHz • Corsair H110i GT P/P • 2x MSI RX 480 8G • Corsair DP 2x8 @3466 • EVGA 750 G2 • Corsair 730T • Crucial MX500 250GB • WD 4TB

replace the PSU with a decent 550W, then drop in a new GPU and call it a day.

Wait another ~4-6 Months and do it then.
Get the same performance for half the price or double the threads...

Then you also should take a look at VEGA56 instead of the nVidia.

Why? Just look at Radeon HD7970 vs. GTX680.

The former one trades blows with GTX780 while the latter battles more often in modern Games with the 7870.

That's bullshit.

Only the Motherboards are really expensive.

The CPUs are not.

12 Thread 1920 is 350

the 16 THread is 559

2920 is 613€

That's reasonably priced, compared with the other Side.

Mobos are expensive because it's a workstation platform like LGA2066 or 3647, those are worth a kidney.

Also shouldn't the V64 card last more than the 56? there wasn't a big price difference last time I checked

Yes but OP will mainly be doing gaming and only moderate video editing. There really isn't any need for Threadripper.

Why do I say that? Because Threadripper isn't ideal for what OP wants to do, especially considering the cost of parts and the fact that it's a workstation platform.

Z390 is way better for OP's usage since heavy gaming isn't a strongpoint of any workstation platform, much less Threadripper.

Yeah, but you also get much more PCIe Lanes, so that you can ram in like 6 NVME SSDs.

Boards usually support 2 or so, the other 4 with a PCIe to 4xM.2

So for Content Creation it might be worth a thought...

Depends on where you live.

Here where I live its between 100 and 150€.

With some Sales it can be up to 200€ (because someone sold a new Blower VEGA for like 260€).

For normal, axial fanned Cards, we're talking about like 350€ for V56 and 400€ for the Gigabyte, 410€ ASUS, Sapphire 439€

56: 350€ ASUS; Gigabyte, Red Dragon (was sold for 309€ 2 weeks ago), Sapphire Pulse 358€.

Sapphire Nitro 56 is total horse shit. Cost the same as the 64...

Though I'd NEVER EVER RECOMMEND ANYONE to get a Blower Card!
AVOID IT! AT ALL COST!

Hey everyone, thanks for your suggestions! I just made a few small changes:

1) RIP RGB Ram

2) i7 instead of i9

3) Better motherboard with those savings

I would LOVE to get NVME storage, but I need at least 2TB, and the current prices are just simply crazy :(
