G1 Gaming GTX 970 memory issues

filippalfi

Hello!

So like the title says, friend is experiencing some issues with his 970 randomly locking up on desktop and in games.

What he did was flashed some custom bios on it with 100mhz lower memory clock, never took it apart and cleaned it though.  After bios reflash card is able to do 20-30 min furmark sessions without issues, which it wasnt before reflash, but still locks up sometimes, even tho less frequently. Do you guys know what could it be? Card boots normally, drivers installed normally, doesnt get past 75c in furmark.

maybe vrms are overheating or some other pcb part, temp means core temperature, but it is not the only thing can overheat

I will clean it properly today, replace the thermal paste and pads, if i have the right thickness. Can u advise me on bios reflashing? I would like to install latest gigabyte bios back on it.

Yea that makes a lot of sense. What’s wrong with the one it came with?

Not quite sure. Card boots up normally, its recognized normally and basically it works. He started having issues with random PC lock ups so he gave it to someone to flash custom bios on it with 100 mhz lower memory clock, which made locking up less frequent, but it didnt dissappear. He tried other GPUs and none of them locked up the PC completely, and im almost positive it was never opened up and cleaned.

Sounds like the worst way to trouble shoot anything. Could just lower the clocks manually. Same thing with random bios’s on the internet.

Yeah, i agree, but wasnt aware he had bios reflashing done. Only thing i could do now is revert to stock bios, take the card apart and clean it properly.

When you do your stress test...find a way to watch the voltages.

The psu uses a 42amp single rail. There is a slight chance that is could be power delivery problem. Not likely, but just to eliminate that as an issue...you can try a different psu in there. I say this becuase i used to have an r9 290x and i had issues and a good psu upgrade solved it

Allright fellas, card is here. Put it in, touched nothing and just left it to loop Heaven. Runs it now for 30 minutes, no crashes, no nothing, works like a charm. Boosts do 1392mhz with this bios and doesnt go over 66c.

Is it possible that it was just the power supply having issues? Or is the celebration premature? ??

I will still open it and clean it.

Try the super bench from unigine.

4k option, make it struggle. Or game with it and see.
