G1 Gaming GTX 970 memory issues

filippalfi

There are no thermal pads at all, heatsink is directly touching the memory. Is that how its supposed to be on this exact card?

Given how it has pad marks for where it’s supposed to go, I’d say no.

That might very well be solution to this. Is it possible to use very thin layer of paste until i get some proper pads?

Doubtful gap is prolly way too large. And thermal paste doesn’t work well like that.

Prolly a .5mm pad. Unless they specifically designed it for paste. Which would be rare.

Could give it a try if you have paste and time to waste.

Applied some MX-4, played few rounds of Apex, seems fine for now.

Did some more gaming with it, nothing happened. Turned the fans to 100% fan speed, VRMs also dont have any pads on them, so they at least have some airflow on them with 100% speed.  Hopefully the issue is overheating VRMs.

Thats why i despise those PC "specialists"and decided to learn about PC building myself awhile back. Obviously the guy who modded the bios took it apart, changed the thermal paste but for some reason didnt put ANY of the thermal pads back on it.

May be best to find a video tear down or perhaps the old ekwb instructions.

May give you an idea of what all pads it came with.

Ok. Did few consecutive tests, zero chrashes.

Launched MGS V, locked up immediately.

Did you just take the card out of his system and plop it into yours? If so...the. you gotta take your psu out and put it into his system to see if that fixes it. Only way to know it is his psu being bad. All of this assuming that the card does not crash with super hardcore stress test as the other person suggested.

Yeah, and took it apart, cleaned it, changed the paste again, but discovered there were no thermal pads at all.

Ran some tests yesterday. It passed few superposition 1080p extreme tests without issues, hour of intesive gaming, and then hour of Heaven on loop. No issues what so ever.

Allright, some updates.

So, since i added some paste to memory chips card works fine with constant 70% fan speed until pads arrive for VRMs. Card worked absolutely fine in my system but when we put it back it was unusable. For some reason it turned out that the issue was overclock to 3.8 ghz on 1.3v,ryzen 3 1200,which is weird because that overclock was tested for hours wih various benchmarks and games, crashed 0 times with 750 Ti. Is it possible that both Antec VP500C 500w and FSP Raider 550w are just unable to power it all?  Btw, card is running fine with CPU dialed back to stock.
