MacBook Pro 13inch Alternative

Looking for a nice, portable laptop with good linux support to replace my aging MacBook Pro 15 inch.  I am looking for a 13 inch ultraportable machine.

 

I refuse to run windows, so Linux is a must. I want something that's not flashy and gamery, needs to be MacBook-quality build, but still has decent hardware and and battery life.

 

Basically, I want a MacBook replacement for running Linux for less than what I would spend on a well-equipped MBP 13. Roughly $2000.

 

Must Haves:

  • Quad-core cpu, preferably 8th gen intel:
  • Graphics performance equivalent to or better than a 2018 MBP 13 (Intel Iris 655)
  • 16GB of RAM
  • GOOD backlit keyboard
  • good trackpad
  • Good display with >1080p screen resolution

Nice to Haves:

  • 8+ hours of battery life
  • Full Thunderbolt 3
  • MacBook-quality display
  • fingerprint sensor

 

I've had my eye on the Huawei Matebook X pro and MateBook 13, but I'm not quite sure about Huawei as a brand. They still seem a bit sketchy to me.

 

Suggestions? After Linus' review of the Blade Stealth I'm kinda turned off of that. XPS 13 has crappy intel HD620 graphics which is only 65% of the Iris 655's performance.

Hauwei Matebook X Pro. I got mine for $1299 during black friday and it's an insane laptop for the price. Checks all of your boxes, costs almost half for what others are charging for the same specs. As long as you buy it through Microsofts store or Amazon you are fine. As a company themselves the thing is a macbook clone face it. It looks and the name even sounds the same. Except it's better than a macbook pro lol. Higher res touch screen, super fast fingerprint scanner, 10 hours of battery life, 16Gbs of RAM, MX150 (15W one), great waterproof keyboard, has actual ports other than USB type C, tiny charger, supports quick charge, better speakers than a macbook pro, sleek design, unibody aluminum design, space grey color, and backlighting. 

 

Cons are webcam placement but I see that as a pro now days. My trackpad was loose but fixing it took 8 minutes and a piece of paper. I also repasted it, added thermal pads, and undervolted so now it doesn't downclock when turboing. Unlike a mac it will downclock and stay under 80C rather than kill itself but be faster. I had been a sole macbook user since 2008 and I just couldn't justify buying one with the horrible keyboard, giant bezels, and stupid price in 2018. I had been a sole macbook user since 2008 and I just couldn't justify buying one with the horrible keyboard, giant bezels, and stupid price in 2018. But should I be thinking of that over the Matebook 13? 

 

The 13 has the full 25w MX150, a faster CPU for cheaper. I like the physical design of the X Pro better, and it looks like it has a better screen? 

 

The biggest turnoff  of the X Pro aside from the name brand is that it seems to have real performance issues compared to the competition. Cinebench and other hard CPU tasks especially. any experience with that?

The 8650U isn't that much faster. It will throttle down too. The 25W GPU is a nicer feature but hurts the battery life a lot. The CPU will downclock because it has aggressive power constraints, but undervolting, plus repaste, thermal pads on VRMs, and adding 2 heatpipes to the fan if you REALLY wanted to will allow the CPU to turbo at it's max speed under any workload at 85C or below. I did all the mods above and it can easily drive a 4K screen plus the internal one watching 2 8K 60fps videos on battery without any dropped frames or the fan turning on. Honestly for the price it's not bad. Sure there are more powerful laptops but combined with the insane screen, keyboard and so on it's just too good of a deal.

Thunderbolt 3 and linux still aren't really playing nicely together. If that is a requirement you might want to stay mac or convert to windows. 

 

Also seems like the matebook pro has it's fair share of issues under linux. Fingerprint scanner doesnt work, two speakers dont work, trouble accessing the bios (surely you could just disable quick boot), and the usual issues with the dgpu.

 

You might look into system76 and the xps developer edition.
