I7 4790k

Go to solution Solved by SethFox,

I have received and installed the new AIO unit, and temps at 4.8GHz are max of 80C under 100% load now. Seems the other one was just faulty.

Problem solved.

So I've had my 4790k for quite a long while now, 3 years at least. Long story short, I bought a new AIO (A DEEPCOOL Captain 240EX, 240mm radiator with dual 120mm fans.)

I ran cinebench and used CoreTemp to monitor my temps, and at its base turbo clock of 4.4GHz, I notice temps of up to 85-ish C. With a little overclocking (core set to 44, turbo enabled, so it runs at about 4.8GHz) I notice that these hit 99, and even 100 C (which.. oddly enough does NOT shut down the PC.)

Now, please don't freak out on me. I know that those temps are dangerous to CPU life and I will not be running my CPU at these speeds all the time. I do use balanced mode when not gaming, and these temps only go this high when under a 100% load.

I was wondering... is this normal for the Devil's Canyon? Is my AIO bad? What would you guys recommend I do? Is my OC'ing wrong? (i.e voltages, etc?)

Thanks for any help!

Edit: My case is a Thermaltake Versa N27 Shade Blade ATX Gaming Mid Tower.

well, if you hear any noise coming from the block it should be running. maybe touch it while it's on and see if you can feel it vibrating aswell.

put your ear to PC (side panel or windowed panel taken off), feel the tubes, feel the block.

I have verified it is running. Touching one of the tubes, I felt a lot of vibration. Not so much from the actual block... it's more faint there.

touch the other tube, just to be safe. I'd do it out of paranoia if I didn't feel much from the block.

I can feel a bit of vibration coming from the other tube as well. (I have also sent a tech support email to DEEPCOOL just in case.)

I have cleaned both the "heat sink" and the cpu thoroughly of residual thermal paste, and remounted it. I ran cinebench (at 4.8GHz because I forgot to turn off my OC.) and it maxed out at 97C.

Also. I can't tell if the vibration is from the fans spinning, or if the pump is properly working. If the pump wasn't working, would my idle temps still be low?

Note: I have got an RMA for my AIO. Will see how thermal's perform with the new one that comes in.

Question: Should I leave the thermal paste that comes with the AIO on, or use my own Arctic Silver 5?

if you have your own, use that.

I can only assume you were getting the same if not better temps on whatever cooling you had before this, so my initial thoughts (since you mentioned it was seated correctly and that the pump was indeed running) were either screwed up mounting hardware or (more likely) a bubble stuck in the block.

Little protip I learned with my H115i when I pull it out of storage: Set it down with the fittings-side of the rad pointed up and smack the block and rad. Seems like that does a pretty good job and getting rid of any trapped air.

Hm. So you mean to make it so the side with the thermal paste on it facing up to the sky and smack it a few times? Just trying to get a good mental image of what you mean.

they just want to sell you stuff. thermal paste really doesnt matter (that much). there is either a problem with the actual cooler, the cpu or with sensors/software. (problems are listed in order of likelihood)

Probably. Motherboard on-board sensor display shows same temps as the software.

And I gently smack the radiator at the top there?

The radiator side won't really matter all that much since the general idea would be to get any air that could be stuck in the block out and then into the rad's end tanks. Though I suppose giving the radiator some smacks along it might help your chances of not getting air back into the block.

Hm, okay. When I receive the new unit I'll give it a try.

I’ve hit 90c on a custom loop running a 4790k at 4.8. Would imagine it can easily be done with something like an aio.
