RX Vega 56 Prices

Are Vega 56s worth it you think with AIBs floating around $340?

 

I am tempted to weight for Vega 7, or just focus on going to an RTX 2070.

 

I'd like to really ramp up my VR performance along with being able to play everything locked at 75hz on my ultra wide monitor.

Some rumors suggested that Vega VII will be a very limited run, only 5000 unit will be available. So I am not too sure if you can buy one.

what? I wasn't correcting your use of the word rumors, rumours is another way of spelling the word, I just mean that it's speculation, and it may not be true that there will be low numbers of cards on launch.

Oh, I didn't know that. I thought I just misspelt rumours. 

 

But it kind of make sense that they will not roll out lots of Vega VII (or start mass production of 7nm RX Vega die). It is not making money for AMD, and at that price point, it is not very competitive.

 

The actual numbers of Vega VII available might depend on how many defected MI60 die are there.

I mean if you have $350 right now and want a card I'd go 2060. It legitimately provides something crazy like 90% of the performance of the 2070 for like 70% of the cost. I wouldn't buy a used Vega 56 at $340 when 2060 outperforms and and would be new for legitimately $10-$30 more. 

 

That said, Radeon VII looks like it won't be a super great buy. From the looks of it, it'll perform like a 2080 for 2080 prices and not have great availability. If you want a card of that class I'd just go 2080. Skip the 2070, it's a stupid card because it doesn't provide enough of a performance uplift over 2060 to justify the massive premium. At least 2080 is like 35% faster.

To me go vega 64 or vega 7 depending its price and real world specs.The vega 56 is a nice card but the vega 64 isn't that much more money right now and worth it to me over the vega 56.

I was looking at the Power Color Red Dragon Vega 56 new as it is $340 on newegg, $300 on their ebay store.

 

However, the GTX 2060 is a hot looking card for the money as well. I really need to read up on it as the benefit of DLSS and what not will more than likely be seen in things like VR no?

In addition, I've been looking into something that changed with Volta and was carried over to Turing. I think some fundamental architectural changes allow the GPU to be even more efficient than we give it credit for.

 

I'm finding Turing to be really interesting, but alas, NVIDIA decided to push the next-gen tax a little too far.

The more I read, the more the GTX 2060 looks to be the best upgrade for "budget" centric VR.

 

Looks like in many cases, both in VR and in "flat" gaming, the 2060 is easily 50%+ faster than the RX 580 and GTX 1060.

 

I am actually blown away as the EVGA RTX 2060 XC is very affordable.

There is a 0% chance DLSS will be used by VR games for many reasons not the least of which being VR games are generally smaller and more Indie, and since devs would need access to Nvidia's supercomputers to get DLSS running, that's not happening. I mean it's not even being used by massively popular flat panel games yet.

 

I mean you can wait for Vega 7. It's only a week away, but there's a 0% chance it pushes prices down, ESPECIALLY for 2060 which it's not competing with. Even if 2070 went down to $450, they could still sell 2060 for $350 and make a compelling value proposition because it performs like 15% worse than a 2070. 

 

I wouldn't count on Nvidia supporting Freesync more widely.

2060 isn't that bad in terms of next-gen tax. It's actually what most people expected in terms of price:performance. Performing as well as the previous generation card at ~2/3 the price. 2060 roughly equals 1080 for $350 when the 1080 was $500. Not bad. It's just that price ramps up really quickly without the performance to back it up. I mean 2070 goes for $500 but is only like 15% faster than 2060.

However, people think the 60 SKU has to start at $200-$250 like it always did. That's where they see an issue.

 

But otherwise, the price/performance ratio appears to be correct. Even in previous generations the 70 SKU cost about 1/4-2/3 less for the same performance as the previous generation's 80 SKU.

yeah it really sucks that  there are no cheap Turing GPUs. That said the price:performance is fine with the 2060. Hopefully the 1660 will cost around $250 and perform like a 1070. The issue was that previously you were getting identical performance for identical cost.

The Vega 56 Dragon actually is pretty good for what I been told, at these prices its a bargain. Seen it as low as 299$.

My issue is, maybe it is worth it to spend the extra $70 to have the newer tech and marginally better performance of the GTX 2060.

 

Maybe it isn't. It is a hard choice!
