I am putting in a i9-9960x into a new system and need a new case. I was going to get the Corsair 570x but it appears the top might not have enough clearance for my x299 msi gaming pro carbon ac motherboard. and my 280mm AIO cooler. Can anybody recommend a good case for x299 and a 280mm AIO mounted on the top? Don't need RGB anything, need good thermals, good airflow.

Meshify/Define S2 has clearance for up to 420mm radiator on the top, so 280mm should fit, considering that pretty much every major brand AIOs have thin radiators.

Ex-EX build: Liquidfy C+... R.I.P.

Ex-build:

Meshify C – sold

Ryzen 5 1600x @4.0 GHz/1.4V – sold

Gigabyte X370 Aorus Gaming K7 – sold

Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8 GB @3200 Mhz – sold

Alpenfoehn Brocken 3 Black Edition – it's somewhere

Sapphire Vega 56 Pulse – ded

Intel SSD 660p 1TB – sold

be Quiet! Straight Power 11 750w – sold

I think it's the problem of thickness. The same reason why the Meshify C doesnt fit AIOs on the top without swapping to slim fans (which give static pressure problem and still doesnt fit every board out there).

Thermaltake P3... More of a test bench and a piece of glass than a case though.  Otherwise full towers like the Corsair 750D / 1000D should be better if you strongly uphold top mounted radiators.

Rule 1 should be "dont buy Kaby Lake X" instead. At least you can defend Skylake-X with core count and frequency, but Kaby Lake X's only worthwhile use is going liquid nitrogen and 2V on the memory sticks.

Yea, it's the thickness of the fans. I guess I should go with a front mounted 360mm rad. That would probably be the easiest and most hassle free decision as I'm tired of looking at cases that could fit a top mounted 280mm rad with my mobo.

Thinking about it, the Phanteks Evolv X is also a viable option. It's meant to hold an extra ITX system at the top of the main ATX board which guarantees space that's big enough for a radiator with push and pull config of fans. Sadly that's the only thing good about the case. Airflow is average, price is bad (though you might not care), don't give you all the accessories that fits in the case (drive cages I believe), and availability is a problem.

very true. Skylake X has its uses, but my general rule of Dont buy Skylake X still applies, especially in todays market.

sorry, but it might just be me, but that there comes of as elitism. also that CPU was the best i could afford during the crypto and memmory crisis/shortage.

its definitvly not worth the pricetag. the reason for rule 1 is that the usecase area of Skylake X is rather small (AVX and maybe Adobe Premier though  you are better of buying the 9900k). the Simple reason is that other options are better. that is why i advice against buying Skylake X in most situations.

Meshify C perhaps. You will need to run Low profile ram like LXP tho. It’s a snug fit but thermals are grewt

Well someone has a cock up his ass here.

Why not a i9 9900k? Still overpriced but imo more useful then the one you referring too.

This forum is extremely toxi and extremely judgemental. I work for a living and this is a workstation computer not a gaming computer. an i9-9900K will not cut it. I love how everybody in here is an expert on what my specific needs are when they don't even know what I do for a living or how this CPU fits into my workflow. Amazing forum! Closing my account, nothing but toxic AF insecure people.

You guys should tell Linus that he doesn't need any HEDT cpu's in any of his employees workstations! Because a i9-9900k is just fine!! Seriously guys, get a life or some knowledge.

Don't take it the wrong way, Skylake-X Refresh does indeed only make sense on very limited scenarios, the i9 9900K is a great purchase because it's a powerful 8c/16t with iGPU which has been doing wonders in hardware acceleration across the board.

Ryzen 2 will match Coffee-Lake with 16 cores 'mainstream' offerings for 1/3 the price, so really be completely sure you do need quad-channel memory and those extras cores at the expense of losing the iGPU hardware acceleration (QuickSync).

Also if you find Skylake-X "7th gen" processors for cheaper consider them, they are the same as Skylake-X refresh entirely only difference is that they got soldered IHS but have much of the same thermals.

About the case, honestly you got the means to afford great stuff like a corsair crystal 570x, throw a Dark Rock Pro 4 or a 360mm AiO and you're golden already.

The 570x will fit the 280mm rad at the top, and it should fit even with that motherboard heat sink. You could also mount it at the front if you so wished.

It's technically their width, as a 240mm cooler should fit no problem in the top, but thats neither here nor there since you're looking at a 280mm cooler. Mounting the cooler at the front would indeed be the easiest setup.
