Hey everyone,

SO I am finally ready to build my first rig, and I want to make sure that I do it right the first time. By doing it "right," I mean I want to make sure I am happy when it is complete and to achieve this I have to obviously by the parts that I will be satisfied with at the end of the build as well as every day that I wake up to use it.

Things to consider;

  • Motherboard size
  • Front drive bays?
  • HDD cages?
  • Cooling needs
  • Size/height
  • Weight
  • Window/no window
  • Color(colour)
  • Shape
  • Fan controllers?

Ther are just some things, have to make sure all your components fit etc.

I would recommend looking at a Fractal Define C and of that doesn’t fit the bill then decide why not.

The Define C is a basic, plain case with no HDD cages or front bays, it has decent cooling and airflow. If it isn’t for you then your looking for something specific that it doesn’t have.

Given that the build could be price, and I def don't want to rush it in case something newer and better gets released, I prefer to buy the parts in pieces over a short period of time. Therefore, I prefer to start with the chassis since I feel like the chassis is the most important part of any rig (not counting performance hardware of course).

So, Can someone and everyone that is willing, PLEASE send me a link or any details you have for a chassis that you think is worth buying! Here are some details so you better understand what I want.

  1. Want a gaming performance rig, so the chassis should be as big as I need it to be
  2. I want the chassis to be as badass in looks, functionality, etc. etc. BUT also the best price as possible (hoping $200-$700) max for the chassis
  3. I am very very interested in a liquid cooled rig, the way the radiator hoses look and just the idea of liquids flowing safely through something that is so liquid averse really piques my interest. With that said, I'm open to ideas if there are other, better cooling ideas
  4. I want people to see it and not believe it is a computer, as in, I really want the chassis to be mind-blowing in looks and design
  5. To be honest, I'm not a HUGE fan of RGB and therefore, if it is cheaper, or I get more money's worth, then it doesn't have to have RGB unless it comes with it.
  6. I use my computer for day trading mostly, which requires gaming performance PCs. I do play some games, And I def do a lot of office work
  7. I am very interested in having at least 2 high-end GPU's. The purpose mainly is to eventually be running 8-10 monitors which is 6 more than my current setup. I believe this fact will help to determine how many slots in the back would be available so the 4-6 or 8 amount of PCI lanes I want on my motherboard will be accessible.

As a newbie, I believe the facts I listed should cover everything to help with the chassis decision? If not, please just ask :)

You guys are awesome, thank you for the help!

@NIneEyeRon

Thank you for your reply.

So, the size of the chassis doesn't matter, whether it be larger than conventional or just standard, as long as it fits with at least a decent amount of space between components.

I really want a hardcore motherboard, but I plan to ask the community about all of the components they recommend I buy and therefore I don't know which motherboard i want. But let me say this, I want a damn good motherboard that has ample PCI-e slots, like maybe at least 6-8 slots. I want to use 2-3 slots just for some massive GPU's like 2080ti's or something (whatever is better). I want to be able to extend to AT LEAST 8 monitors, or 10 or 12 or whatever I can fit. But at least 8.

I want USB ports, USB 3.0's or whatever the newest is. Top of the line Wireless capability. i want to have (if possible) slots for 2 NVME storage cards each AT LEAST 512GB or 1 TB. I also saw something called a U.2 slot and I'm pretty sure I want that too (haha). Plus perhaps 1-2 external SATA drives 2-4 TB each. The motherboard should support how swapping. And it should def support DDR4 or whatever is newest for RAM.

I think the chassis should def have a window to see inside since the components are going to be super dope.

This case is pretty awesome, it seems a little small or short for what i intend tho no? Or am I wrong?

Wow look how cool this one is on Newegg, super pricey tho, but I would love something similar for cheaper:

It looks spacious enough so that future upgrades would be easy. It also had a bracket to mount a GPU in a vertical position, and although that is just eye candy, I'm thinking my multi-GPU system probably couldn' support that? I really could see any cons except the prices.

  1. The newest is USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C. Beyond that most USB ports are still 3.0
  2. Some motherboards offer wireleess but many focsu oon better ethernet ports.
  3. Mnay high end board will have that
  4. U.2 is a form factor similar to how M.2. Both form factors use the NVME protocol (which is what determines speed). U.2 ports have been almost wiped out in favor of M.@ due to the size advantage while not compromising on speed. Be careful, as M.2 can come in both SATA and NVME speeds.
  5. Even low end mothereboards have 4 SATA ports. Be mindful, some boards will disable two traditional SATA ports in order to use the M.@ slots (they ALWAYS tell you this in the manual and usually on promotional materials. High end boards usually have 6+ of these traditional SATA ports so this shouldnt be an issue.
  6. Hot swapping of.... What, exactly? For HDD's this isnt a motherboard feature but a case one. GPU's cannot be hot swapped period.
  7. DDR4 support is more determined by the CPU. If you're buying any CPY from intel (later than 2015) or any AMD CPU (late than 2017) it wont be an issue.
  8. 95% of cases made since 2015 have some sort of side panel window, usually Full Acrylic or Glass.

The Define R6 would be a good starting point since oyu dont have anything finalized yet.

A cheaper alternative to the Enthoo Elite would be the Enthoo Luxe 2 which will launch at $189. This case is BIG though so idf you're not going to go crazy watercooling, it might be a complete waste of space.

Vertical GPU's implementations only support 1 GPU.
