As with most "fan boys", be it Intel, AMD, "insert vendor name here", it can usually be difficult to get them to see nay other perspective, no matter your reasoning. :)

Best bet, just try and avoid the conversations or at least the really contentious parts. :D

All of these companies are good, I wouldn't say I'm a fanboy (hate that word, so horrible lol) but I personally prefer NVIDIA and Intel, I used to hate ATI because no end blew up and had to be sent back and I've only had a single NVIDIA card die on me (an old 9600 GT which had a failed capacitor or two) but now ATI has been bought by AMD I would certainly be willing leave the past where it belongs and give them a try but it just in the older days that I was unfortunate enough to have a lot of ATI card's fail in the space of about 8 years compared to only a single NVIDIA card, I'm no expert but in my personal experiences (other peoples experiences may differ) that is a pretty decent reliability record.

Let him be a fanboy while you snicker and laugh at him for no apparent reason:) No dont do that, that would be mean. Show him the amd vs nvidia show down that linus did, there is a crysis 3, far cry 3, tomb raider and bio shock infinite show downs that you can show him.

Life is pain. Anyone who says any different is either selling something or the government.

This might seem a bit insane but, I had an 8800 GT that died after about 8 months of use.

My brother had 3 8600 GTs die on him & he bought a 8400 GT that we put in my mom's computer that also died.

So basically every single 8000 series Nvidia card that we've ever bought died T_T, something to do with a soldering issue on the 8000 series.

The 8400 GT was the last card to die (about 3 months ago) & the funny thing is, after it died I replaced it with my much older ATi x600 card & it's still working ! lol

My 8800 GT didn't die like the rest of the cards, usually artifacts and crashes indicate the end of a GPUs life, not with this card, the 8800 GT died heroically while playing Crysis warhead, I smelled burning plastic, shut the computer off & opened the case, found smoke pouring out of my card T_T, Crysis litterally killed my graphics card !

In any case, I don't care about which company I'm buying my card from, as long as it's the best performer for the price, I'm happy.

A fanboy is hard to convince otherwise even if you have valid points. everyone will eventually lean towards a certain brand because brand x has crapped out on him.

For example a friend of mine had a Asus 8800gts (reference card) die on him, and since that point he avoids anything with asus branded on it, no matter how much you convince him, he will still think it's trash

Didn't both AMD and NVIDIA score pretty evenly through out with AMD having better FPS on certain games and NVIDIA also having better FPS on certain games?

wow that is insane, I might have been lucky with only a single NVIDIA dying on me but I did have a 8800 GTX and was faultless, I think that is the only 8 series I had.

I've never had any issues with the GeForce 7 and 9 series unless that is mainly luck once again.

really wow never seen that before from Asus, something a wise man once told me when I was a kid that I really liked is that anything engineered regardless of how expensive can and do fail (whether its mechanical or electrical).

It's also quite funny that it's the older cards that have failed, from my experiences I've not seen any NVIDIA's die from the GeForce 200's and the same with AMD from the same period so for that they are both pretty equal in the reliability wars.

Not really no, AMD dominated through out, winning every showdown except Crysis 3 which was a dead tie.

I've been running a 4870 for almost 5 years now without any issues, the card still holds its overclock incredibly well.

I've also been running an Ati X600 for almost 9 years now, and the card is still going strong.

Both are Sapphire.

I think reliability has more to do with the board partner rather than AMD or Nvidia, GPUs themselves rarely fail, because each one goes through the infamous binning process.

ahh well regardless, I'm sure both manufacturers would deliver a smooth gameplay so it's all good:)

I think I've read somewhere that NVIDIA and AMD don't actually make the chips, from what I was reading they apparently design the architecture then take the design to TSMC which then make the actual chips.

Can't remember where the article is so don't take my word for it but I'm sure I've read somewhere that they are chip designers and not chip makers.

My Geforce 9800GTX+ died after like 3 years. It's the only card I've ever owned that died. My impression though, is that the 8xxx and 9xxx series of GeForce were the worst QC Nvidia have ever done. Today Nvidia are known for reliability and longevity while AMD tops the RMA charts. Such is life, up and down. That's why it's important to never become a fanboy and be critical whenever you are looking to upgrade something.

You may prefer AMD based on it's advantages when it comes to texture buffering (thus allowing higher res textures or multi-monitor) but he may prefer Nvidia based on it's current high relative reliability and longevity. Or he could prefer Nvidia based on their superior video encoding. That means both of you have valid reasons for preferring one or the other. His reasons will matter more to him and he doesn't have to see both sides if he doesn't use several monitors. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but the individual user will have priorities and that will decide what they choose.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.
