Hi folks,

I'm looking for a new phone as a replacement for my SO's iPhone 6s.

She's wanting to make the switch to Android, and currently we're considering the OnePlus (6 or 6t, she really likes the rose gold 6), an Honor play or maybe an Honor 10.

We're in Ireland and looking for something around the 500-600 euro max.

She primarily uses her phone for web browsing, light gaming and watching videos/Netflix/Twitch.

What would you recommend?

As things are right now, I'd stay the hell away from Honor and it's parent company, Huawei. Canada detained their CFO and Poland their Polish sales director, both under suspicion of espionage for China; meanwhile, many countries are banning Huawei products from being used in mobile data infrastructure.

Mind you, I'm not saying you shouldn't because "ERHMAHGERD MUH DATA IS BEIN SPYD ON". All companies are gonna do that. The real potential problem is that it's possible (though unlikely) that Huawei could be outright banned from certain countries, and buying a 500-600€ piece of electronics to suddenly have no support in case of a problem is not my idea of a good time.

Excellent point, I will definitely take that into account.

Thanks

Not sure how much it costs in your area, but I suggest an LG Stylo 4, it’s absolutely amazing

screen is awesome, camera is awesome, comes with a stylus, it was able to run all the games I wanted, and I just love it

until I broke it ?

Definitely should consider the OnePlus, I've watched several reviews about these 2 phones and the OnePlus would be a better fit for your SO since she would only be using for light gaming and web browsing. Plus, OnePlus has better camera since Honor phones are more focused on performance. The OnePlus 6T also has a droplet notch, much smaller compared to the other 2 Honor phones you mentioned.

Personally i think of this as a bad reason to stay away from their phones. Mostly because of the "meh" evidence (or lack there off). I mean Germany rejected the idea of a ban because lack of reason behind it.

Good reaspm to stay away from Huawei specifically in terms of phones (their laptops are actually quite good and probably top 5 on the market) is the bad OS skin EMUI, the use of more fragile front glass and the lackluster OS support.

The Oneplus 6/t sounds good.

Alsp take a look at samsung S9 and the Note 8.

I would go for the Samsung Galaxy S8.

Awesome phone.

Better get the S8+ if you find it at that price.

Oneplus 6t is a great phone.

Battery Life is awesome, build quality/screen are great. Thunder Purple looks sexy!

UI is pretty much a better stock android. Looks/feels like stock, but under the hood it has some nice additional features, like native Icon Pack support, or an extendet screenshot function.

Updates also come very frequently, fast, and long.

The Alert Slider for a true Silent mode (Stock Android doesn't have that anymore, only "do not disturb"), where you really ask yourself, how is every other company stupd enough to NOT copy this incredible killer feature. Something, she won't have to miss from her old iPhone.

Camera is not the absolute best you can find, but it's very good for the price point, and it comes quite close to the "top tier" - especially with the GCam Mod.

The Notch is the sexyest you can find. Small "teardrop notch", with the best shape of all (not that "edgy" like some others, like Mate 20)

You don't get Qi Charging, no official IP rating (inofficially it's protected, but don't push it..), no headphone Jack (np even for me --> Adapter, problem solved). The Speaker is quality wise "ok" but only one-sided, and bad position (should be on the other Side of the USB C port - it's pretty much not possible NOT to cover it while Gaming). Also, no notification LED, if that's a bummer for you. I can make it work, i simply tap the screen for the ambient display, to see if there's something new. Or i simply pick it up when i have spare time.

Pros and Cons, like every other phone out there. I like it, because it does give a tremendous Performance, long battery life, great feel/build, extremely nice feeling buttons, and the alert slider. Combined with a more clean stock-android experience. Makes it something different than Huawei/Samsung etc.

But nothing of that will be in that Price range - when i hear the smallest Galaxy S10 (lite) will be for 750€~ starting point - the S10 and S10+ will be at 900+, even cracking 1000.

Untill those "new 2019 flaggships" come into the 600€ Price range, you will have to wait untill August or something like that.

And may 2019 will be around when Oneplus 7 comes out - will also be a very intersting phone.

Most midrange phones won't be able to beat 2018 flaggships.

However, Pocophone remains to be an interesting phone (untill Pocophone F2 comes out, probably not untill summer/fall),

And the new Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 (Pro) sounds really damn interesting.

As a OnePlus 3T owner I can say they have good devices. Phone has been rock solid for at least two years and going strong.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
