What is this Worth?

iLostMyXbox21
Go to solution Solved by mariushm,

Not worth it.

And depends on what i5 sandy bridge it is.

You can buy a system with an i5 2400 for 90$ on Newegg: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAAJ26V48929&ignorebbr=1

Or one with a i5-3470 for 93$: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAAYZ8MJ0626

So it's not a great deal.

So I’m browsing, and someone near me is selling a PC for $100, but I wanna make an offer to see if I can get it for less since I’m greedy ?

/s

so the specs are:

Intel I5 Sandy Bridge

4gb DDR3

500gb HDD (I have a 1tb 7200 that I can put in it)

240w PSU

of course, I will add 4 more gb ram, change the HDD, since I will bet it is 5400rpm, and change the PSU to maybe a 500w

not sure if the guy is still selling it or not, I have not talked to him, I just want to know how much I should ask for before I talk to him just in case he does still have it

Eh i wouldnt really even bother for it. You can do so much better with a bit more

Yeah that’s the thing, I’m 15 and can’t get a job until August, so I only get like $60 every Christmas, and then maybe $80 for my birthday, so if I try to save my money like that, it will take forever.

So so if I get this PC, I can slowly upgrade it as I go, but until then I can just use the integrated graphics, and get a PSU next, then a GPU, then RAM

Basically very light gaming (things that I find on itch.io that even my crappy laptop will run no problem)

and light game dev, which my laptop can run as well

and since this system is way better then my laptop, I’m pretty sure if my laptop can run it, so can this

You are probably right but as Mariushm just mentioned there are other options out there.  You can also find i7 sandy bridge system out there in the $100 range.

Oh... wowzers thanks, honestly, after looking at Userbenchmark (I don’t use it to see fps, just to compare) and it says the 3470 is better (see image below) so imma try and go for that instead, thank you so much ?

Don't rush in buying one.

A lot of these are in small cases that only support half-height video cards, so if you'll ever think of upgrading the video card you may have very few choices.

Also, some have motherboards that don't even have pci-e x16 slots.

First google the model you're thinking of buying and check brochures that are available on their site (hp, dell etc) and optionally look up in Google Images the system ...

For example for that second one with i5-3470 you can enter in Google Images this : "Compaq Elite 8300 SFF motherboard" and you'll find plenty pictures

One of those is the picture below, which tells me that tne system would have a pci-e slot (the black one)  but there's a negative thing : the motherboard seems to require a custom power supply (there's no 24pin atx connector) ...

Looking at the specifications on their site -  https://support.hp.com/ro-en/document/c03345460  - you can see that the slim version comes with a 240w psu, so that pretty much limits you to a sub 100w video card, like a RX 560 or a GTX 1050 / 1050ti at most.

So you may want to do some more research.

A gtx 1050ti will work perfectly for my usage, I don’t really do heavy gaming, I have a ps4 for that, I mostly just wanna play small games and make games

And if you can stretch your budget to around 200$ you can do way better than a refurbished system

50$ ASRock A320M-HDV R3.0 AM4 AMD Promontory A320 - https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157862

100$ AMD RYZEN 3 2200G Quad-Core 3.5 GHz (3.7 GHz Turbo) Socket AM4 65W - https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113481

25$ G.SKILL Value 4GB 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400- https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232611

35$ (20$ after 15$ mail in rebate) after CORSAIR VS Series, VS450, 450 Watt (450W), Active PFC, 80 PLUS White Certified Power Supply  - https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139230

Add a 20$ case and a hdd and you're done.

The integrated graphics on 2200g is fast enough to play small games, so you wouldn't have to buy another video card, so you save some more money.

ps: though system would be kind of slow with just 4 gb of ram and windows 10 - you can get Windows 7 to work, but it's a pain in the ass, Ryzen processors are better supported in Windows 10.

Yeah I was thinking about a configuration something like that, but I decided against it because I don’t have the time to put together a PC, plus I don’t wanna blow off $200+ before I even know if I like PC (this will be my first one)

Yeah, it literally takes 20-30 minutes to put the system together. It's lego with 4-5 parts.

Take out motherboard from box,

put cpu in socket,

put cooler on top,

insert memory stick in slot,

put io shield on case ,

slide motherboard in case,

put hdd inside,

put power supply inside,

connect 24pin cable and 4/8 pin cpu cable,

connect sata power cable to hdd, connect sata data cable to mb

connect power switch from case to the motherboard header

Done..

Put WIndows 10 on a usb stick and install windows
