Hey guys, so before i upgraded to my current rig (gtx 760, i5 4570, 8gb ram etc...) I had a radeon hd 7770 and a  core2duo E6600 with 2gb of ddr2 memory.

As you can probably guess, i was not getting great fps in any games unless i had the settings on low (even then it was hard to play almost any game)

However, I saw Linus's video on the Radeon HD 7790 which included the performance of a Radeon HD 7770 for comparison and it was able to run most games at 30-45fps at 1080p on high settings.

My friend wants me to build him a budget gaming PC for his upcoming birthday and i told him I would give him my old

Radeon HD 7770 1GB from MSI so that he can save some money and get an overall more decent rig, however I don't want to give it to him if he can't play games at mid-high settings with playable FPS.

His all time favorite games are Skyrim, League of Legends, Batman Arkham Asylum, and he wants to get into MMORPGS as well.

SO my question for the linustechtips community is, will he be able to have a good gaming experience with this graphics card with a decent cpu and 8gb of ram?

I'm aware that the 7770 was bottlenecked by the 2gb of ddr2 ram and the Core2duo E6600. So what if he buys a i5 and 8gb of ram?

Thanks in advance guys :)

If you can get a better graphics card by bumping down from the i5 to a 6300 or 750K, do so.

If not, a 7770 will do the job when paired up with a modern i5.

The 7770 is a great "bang for your buck" card. It is, however, a little dated. A r9 270x would definitely be a great upgrade if he wants to max out games.

Yes i have that same card :) its the ghz edition from MSI. If it performs well enough i will give it to my friend so he can save money and buy a better GPU later on. Could someone help me come up with a decent budget build? He has a monitor and peripherals already

7770 is a very capable card, even at 1080p, will play any game out there with decent settings.

Those cards right there are kind of the best deals right (price to performance wise) so they're definitely some of the best choices for a budget build. Things can get pretty intense if you get into modding skyrim though.

He wont be modding, Hes fine with how skyrim looks as hes a console gamer

so what should i pair the 7770 with? i was thinking an i5 4570 so that when he upgrades his GPU, his cpu will still be able to handle games since i5's have fewer but stronger cores compared to the FX series. Also they draw less TDP and produce less heat.

Stay with the i5, the 6300 is good, but not i5 good.

What budget? Is a copy of Windows needed?
