It's been a while Audi is using Nvidia Tegra in their fancy cars. Seams to be going well for them, as they can provide a smooth interface and interacting GUI, unlike other cars that makes you feel that they are taking a 386, downclock, and tries to run Crysis on it (To compete, they do these fancy graphics things, but use under power processors to save money or simply ignorant in what power you need for what they are trying to do, so you get this choppy unresponsive experience)

hacking cars just got easier. Car and driver did an article a while back about how modern cars can have their steering, brakes, and accelerator compromised remotely. Imagine how with a digital dash, you can now manipulate drivers into speeding, or make the car seem like it has more gas than it does. It doesn't sound like much, but it will make a difference.

Finally my Santa hat doesn't look out of place

I saw that article it was quite interesting but it wasn't as simple as just hacking the system. First they needed complete access to the interior of the car where they then place a computer connected to the car to actually hack it, no remote hacking only remotely controlled. But for me i saw it as no different then cutting the brake lines or doing other physical damage or modding to the car which can cause accidents.

I don't think you would even have to access the inside. The best way to do it is from malicious software. Seed a torrent file with some mp3's and then have a file in the album with the virus. The average person won't notice and would copy it over to there car, and boom, virus

You can do that, that will affect the gps and entertainment system (still bad) but most cars those units are kept on a separate network to the ecu of the car. The ecu can only be connected to via the service port in the car. One thing they can probably hack remotely withing a couple of meters of the car is the tracking device people use for security and assistance then they can remotely shutdown the car as if it were stolen.

I'm no expert on the matter, but if I recall correctly, you shouldn't be worried about the ECU, but the CAN bus (if I remember correctly, it stood for controller-area-network bus, which communicates to the ECU, and can do something as serious as disabling brakes.

Yeah same im no expert, but what we can agree on is if the cars controls aren't closed system or highly encrypted they should be else i can see car companes getting sued like crazy.
