Help with my motherboard swap.

Hi, so I currently have a z170 board and will be upgrading to z390. Are there any precautions that i need to take? I will also be doing a fresh install of windows. And can you please list all the main drivers I will need? Thanks!

Umm, do you mean a complete system change CPU + mobo or are you gonna try JUST a new mobo, if so what CPU do you have?

Ahh that's OK then, AFAIK 6th or 7th gen will NOT work on z390... so just wanted to check.

you could try your install you already have first. works sometimes. otherwise a fresh install and the chipset drivers are the minimum

Yeah, I didn't think OP would want to go that route seeing as he is asking about what he needs for mobo swap.

OP, just get the chipset and LAN drivers, after that both your USB ports and network should work as required, and then any more drivers you need should be a breeze.

Not really, if you remember to pre-download at least the drivers I mentioned before you do the swap you should be good.

My mobo actually didn't need the LAN drivers even (although I had them anyway) as it has a feature in the BIOS/UEFI to connect to the servers and get that driver anyway... it's a failsafe kind of for people that either don't have another PC or who didn't already get the LAN drivers before building the PC. Also windows will sometimes have the drivers you need, but I personally think it's better to be prepared just in case, for people that don't have multiple systems mostly, but there can sometimes be unforseen problems for even the most advanced users. I remember a certain chipset that needed LAN drivers and USB drivers... sorting that out was not simple as obviously you couldn't download the drivers to the sytem itself, and also couldn't use USB... I had to use a SATA CD/DVD to install the USB and LAN drivers IIRC.
