I am a complete pc noob... I play Xbox and I want to switch to a PC. I know the building is better and cheaper than going pre-built, but I have no knowledge of any parts and I don't know where to start or how to choose the parts If I do want to build a pc. Budget is around 1k btw. I want to know how I know what parts to choose.

Here is a 1000$ parts list

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB (graphics card)

Intel core i5 8400 (cpu)

any 8gb ddr4 ram

any z370 or h370 atx motherboard

any case that support your motherboard (atx case, mid tower)

120gb ssd

500w psu just in case

you don’t have to be too specific which which part you buy.

The gtx 1060 is an okay graphics card.

i5 8400 is a cheap good cpu for gaming.

8gb ddr4 ram is good for light gaming but you will need 16gb soon

120gb ssd is fast, cheap but have limited space, so you can have another 1tb hdd to load games.

that’s all i can tell you if you are very new in building

What monitor do you plan to use? Do you have one, do you need one inside your current budget or do you have other monies for that? This is a great freesync setup for 1080p:

You can safely buy a windows 10 key for pretty cheap, btw. I'd recommend the $30-45 option from the article below

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/get-windows-10-free-or-cheap,5717.html

Do you have a Mouse and mouse pad (18-24" is a good start), keyboard, headset?

getting windows 10 isn't free?

It is, for the most part.

"Further blemishing the visual aesthetics of Windows 10 is the lack of personalization you’ll have to endure. If you don’t activate Windows 10, you won’t be able to change Personalization options in the Settings menu. That means no access to personal desktop wallpapers, slideshow backgrounds, Start, taskbar, Action Center or title bar colors, light or dark color schemes, font choices or lock screen options."

You can always activate a key later, but $30/40 bucks I think it's worth it.
