Is a 2080ti needed?

minimalist

I have an Acer 1440p 144hz monitor.  I’ll be getting another as well.  Do I need to get a 2080ti if I want 144fps?  I’ll be playing BF5 mostly.  I’m not even sure if a 2080ti can fit that tbh

1080 Ti/2080 will do that easily, a 1080/2070 probably can too. Unless you're planning to use ray tracing, then even a 2080 Ti wouldn't be able to do it AFAIK. You pretty much only need a 2080 Ti if you're doing 4K, or you have the money and just want the best.

Any idea what kind of FPS you get with the 2080ti and rtx on?

IIRC it was struggling to push 60fps at only 1080p pre-patch, now IDK, haven't seen updated benchmarks but apparently it was much improved. Pushing 1440p 144Hz will still be incredibly hard though, doubt it'd be able to do it.

So a 2080 then will get me 144 FPS on a 1440p monitor

it depends on the game you play, my old build had a 1080 ti and the only games i couldn't run 4k/60 on (similar to 1440p/144) was warhammers and odyssey, though in case of 144hz in aaa games, your cpu will bottleneck way before the 2080 does.

For bf5 it's a cpu bottleneck for 144, but you'd still have to turn settings down even if that wasn't the case.

Edit: GENERALLY i'd say 2070=2k/144.

2080=4k/70+ 1440p/120

2080 ti=4k/85 1440p/144

the minimum to drive 144 in aaa games would be a i7 8700

I’m updating everything.  I have a 9700k now and 32gb of ram.

So so you think I’d need a 2080ti for 144 FPS in BF5?

imho yes, if you are playing multiplayer, you are gonna run into fights that will cause frame drops, though a 2080 is a better bang for buck, underrated cause nvidia botched their RTX launch.

My buddy has a 2080ti paired with a i5-8600K and averages around 200fps with dips down to 150, on 1440p. I'm running a i7-8700K paired with a 1080ti and bf5 is running smoothly on 165Hz 1440p

Note: The fps are from bf5 mp and may vary depending on map

Interesting.  I might just go 2080 and then update to 2080ti within 90 days

It depends on what quality settings you run BF5 at.  With everything cranked up, no RTX, you will not be seeing 1440p@144hz on a 2080.  A 2080 Ti may get you there.  Of course, you can turn it down.

The chart below can give you a sense of the relative performance of the cards.  I have not seen the game do this well however in a full 64 player match on my setup.

Depends if you are willing to pay $700+ for 20 FPS.

You will definately need a 2080Ti to hit 1440P/144HZ on Ultra, however, to hit that on large multiplayer maps you will need an 8700K at a minimum. If you have the i7-4790K like your signature suggests you will be bottlenecked well before 144hz.

My sons computer has the 7700K @ 4.9ghz and is pretty much at 90% or more the entire time he is playing 64-player multiplayer. He is still able to push his 1080TI at almost its full potential which is usualy around 100fps depending on the amount of players

I would just get a 2080/1070 ti/1080 ti/vega 64 and be done with it

all of those cards can keep up pretty nice with that monitor
