Hi, currently planning to buy a new mobo for my 8086k.

My question is: are there any substantial differences between the X Formula and the X Code?

Considering I do not have a custom loop(maybe getting one in a year or so) and that the formula costs 50€ more than the code

How do you plan to get a formula X? It doesn't look like it's selling at most of the vendors online (unless you plan to buy at a store somewhere).

the Formula models are the ones that have EK's built-in VRM water blocks.

I had the X for my 8086k build but the top VRM block port interfered with a top-mounted radiator fan so I had to drop from a 420mm to a 360mm.

When I bought a z390 board for the 9900k I chose the Code and just went with a CPU block only. Working fine.

HEDT: i9 10980XE @ 4.9 gHz, 64GB @ 3600mHz CL14 G.Skill Trident-Z DDR4, 2x Nvidia Titan RTX NVLink SLI, Corsair AX1600i, Samsung 960 Pro 2TB OS/apps, Samsung 850 EVO 4TB media, LG 38GL950G-B monitor, Drop CTRL keyboard, Decus Respec mouse

Laptop: Razer Blade Pro 2019 9750H model, 32GB @ 3200mHz CL18 G.Skill Ripjaws DDR4, 2x Samsung 960 Pro 1TB RAID0, repasted with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut
Gaming Rig: i9 9900ks @ 5.2ghz, 32GB @ 4000mHz CL17 G.Skill Trident-Z DDR4, EVGA RTX 2080 Ti Kingpin, Corsair HX1200, Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB, Asus PG348Q monitor, Corsair K70 LUX RGB keyboard, Corsair Ironclaw mouse

if budget is a big concern that's valid - I choose usually based on function though, and then as a secondary concern try to find a cheaper price... like my HEDT is using an Asus Rampage VI Extreme but I bought it from Amazon Warehouse Deals as a return for $400 instead of the new ~ $750 or so.... it works fine and wasn't missing any accessories or anything.

Yeah I guess this isn't the stuff I dabble with, I'm doing a z390 aorus pro+9700k+AIO, not water cooling and high end.

So I should just go with the code?

if you don't want to use the VRM water block yeah I would just get a cheaper model. Is there something on the Code that you want which is missing from the Hero? It seems like most people usually go with the Hero model.

are they pretty bad? everyone said my XI Code has the same bad VRM but I'm running just fine 9900k OC at 5.3gHz 1.35v - it's a bit toasty so I'm going to see if using one of der8auer's direct-die plates will help bring temps down (not throttling but I don't like seeing 80+ C ever).

Well, it's not the worst VRM ever but it's pretty poor, especially for Asus. They just decided to cheap out on the VRM quality and they kinda can since lots of people buy Asus because they usually make good stuff. The Gigabyte motherboards are easily the best ones for VRM temps and overclocking. Hardware unboxed made a video about all the high end Z390 motherboards.
