Should I go for 144 hz or stay with 60 hz monitor?

Emski89

Hello, I just want to clarify,

I've heard 144 hz monitor is so smooth and relaxing to the eye, and yes it's cool and so nice as they say compared to 60 hz. But I only know that 144 hz is only good for competitive games like cs go, dota 2, pubg, or any other games that requires 1st person shooting - multiplayer based games... but in my case, I don't play them at all 'coz I don't like multiplayer games and/or competitive ones with fast movement, screen, etc... I only play RPG games with adventures like tomb raider, Nier, far cry, fall out, BF 1, CoD, etc,.. so with the games I play and in the future, should I ups to 144 hz or not necessarily and stay with 60 hz?

My system is i5 8400 and gtx 1060 6gb

CPU: Intel i5-8400 (8th gen) | Motherboard: Gigabyte Z-370M DS3H | RAM: 2 x 8GB 3000 MHz Trident Z RGB | GPU: Gigabyte RTX 2060 6GB | PSU: Seasonic FOCUS+ Gold 550W | Case: Thermaltake Versa H18 TG Edition| Cooler: DeepCool Gammaxx GT RGB CPU Cooler | Storage: SSD - Kingston 120GB / HDD - Toshiba 1TB | Monitor: 24" HKC 144Hz | OS: Windows 10 64-bit

Its nice for any game as long as there's motion involved. But also everything else you do with your system, like browsing the web, using Windows in general, it looks so good and smooth.

It's more like "do your computer is powerful enough to handle 144Hz". 60Hz is easy - for most games 1060 and i5 will be enough. But 144Hz is over 2 times more than 60Hz.

144Hz is good for any application, even when you're browsing. I've recently got myself 144Hz monitor and began re-playing Witcher trilogy, and it feels amazing. Playing Battlefield 5 is just nigh'n day difference.

It's good in general, especially online games and fast paced. So as you said, you don't play online games, competitive and fast movement, so no need. Could get a better IPS with higher resolution maybe. Or just save and upgrade a PC down the line.

I went from 60hz to 144hz in January 2018. I didn't think it would make a difference aside from pleasing my eyes, but its soo much more. The smoothness is unmatched, even navigating the file explorer is more responsive. I only have an old i7 4790k and an R9 Fury, but I run mostly anything 60fps+. If you are considering it, especially given your i5 will be better at fps minimums than my i7, you should get one. You will not regret it :D

CPU: INTEL Core i7 4790k @ 4.7Ghz - Cooling: NZXT Kraken X61 - Mobo: Gigabyte Z97X SLI - RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ares 2400mhz - GPU: AMD Sapphire Nitro R9 Fury 4G - Case: Phanteks P350X - PSU: EVGA 750GQ - Storage: WD Black 1TB - Fans: 2x Noctua NF-P14s (Push) / 2x Corsair AF140 (Pull) / 3x Corsair AF120 (Exhaust) - Keyboard: Corsair K70 Cherry MX Red - Mouse: Razer Deathadder Chroma

Bit of an AMD fan I suppose. I don't bias my replies to anything however, I just prefer AMD and their products. Buy whatever the H*CK you want.

Hmmm there is a noticable difference from 30 to 60...... and there is a very noticable difference from 60 to 120hz.  Anything above 120hz like 144hz monitor is icing on the cake.

But the difference from 144 to 240 minimal and not even noticeable.  So ya just talking about this waters my mouth I want 144hz display, but I feel I would have to downgrade to a 1080p or 1440p monitor.. reducing my resolution I love.

Nothing really obvious. You must check yourself and being skeptical. Sometimes people see and hear somehing that is not real - and in many times it's "day and night" difference, even if there can't be any difference.

No, I say that you should test one first - maybe some of your friends has one.

Some people can't see the difference, so I would go to something like the local Best Buy to test out some monitors, to see if it makes a difference. I still need to do that, as I'm deciding if I should get an ultrawide or not.

This made me realize much, Since I don't play fast paced/movement games where I need to kill enemies asap... since I only play RPG.

Dude 60hz is crapola,  Im suffering with one I know..... 120 or 144hz means more pixels per second, means smooth and not blurry even in fast movement or watching action video.. its life its almost 3d in a way.  Like a hand movement ,, at 60hz  your skipping frames and its jittery and blurry.

In real life we live in with our eyes and not looking at screens is 60hz.  Some will say 30hz tho.  However in a TV or display monitor going from 60hz to 144hz is smoother much smoother and faster,,,,,  even when you move your mouse around ,, your losing frames or skipping frames but on a 144hz moving your mouse fast shows it moving smoothly and all pixels are captured and its bliss.

Trust me Im a smooth kinda guy and I miss my Sony FW900 CRT 22.5 viewable 80hz desktop 2304x1440 and gaming 1920x1200res smooth as butter.

Head to your local tech store or anywhere really that has monitors/pc on display. Here in Aus we have places like jbhifi and Harvey Norman that have different spec monitors on display. When I bought my first higher refresh rate monitor I didn't even need to launch a game to feel the improvements.
