Is there a way to manually set my CPU clockspeed without messing with voltage?

Or is there a way to get turbo boost to do what it seems it's suppose to do?

i5-6402p

MSI B150M Bazooka Plus

Cryorig C7

When I set the max processor state to 99%, it clocks it to 2.7 GHz(0.1 GHz lower than normal clock speed) in Windows and while gaming.

It won't go above 2.7 GHz because it is set to the max processor state of 99%.

When I set the max processor state to 100%, it clocks it to 3.2 GHz(max turbo boost in 4 core games) and 3.4 GHz in Windows or 1-2 core games.

I have turbo boost enabled but it seems all that does is force the CPU to run at 3.2 GHz while gaming and never go below or above that. I'm thinking the power plan has something to do with this.

Ideally, I'd like the CPU to operate at the 2.8 GHz it's supposed to and go up to 3.2 GHz when needed but apparently that's not how turbo boost works or I have something set up wrong somewhere. Possibly that power plan.

I feel that it's possible to get my CPU to operate at 2.8 GHz by disabling turbo boost and then when I set the max processor state to 100%, it would then operate at 2.8 GHz. But that would mean it will not turbo boost to 3.2 GHz when needed(not that I ever see it do that in the first place when it's enabled because of the 99% setting).

.......... Why?

Turbo boost isn't an "always on" thing. It depends on TDP, settings in bios, temp, etc. There are also things called C-states which allow the processor to downclock when it's not being used.

Turbo boost also isn't an "all core" thing. It's typically only 1 core.

You could disable energy saving C-states and your cpu would always run at 2.8 GHz and boost up when needed, although that'd waste energy.

What.... exactly are you trying to accomplish here?

What settings in BIOS? And how does temp factor in to turbo boost?

How do I do that? I had my CPU run at 2.7 GHz at all times for 2 years without energy bill issues.

Is there a way to manually set my CPU clockspeed without messing with voltage? Instead of 2.7(cool as can be yet under-performing) or 3.2(hot yet performing at max potential), I'm looking for 2.8 or 2.9 or 3.0(I feel one of these is a sweet spot). Why? Because of what you see in parenthesis.

Obviously a better cooler would be my best bet and just game at 3.2 but I love my cooler. I just got it and it does it's job better than stock did and I feel it would do an even better job at a sweet spot GHz.

Go into your BIOS and adjust your CPU multiplier to your max boost speed 3.2Ghz, but on all cores.

Go and disable boost (since you're locking it to boost speeds) , but keep c-states enabled so your PC downclocks when doing non-intensive tasks (browsing internet, youtube, etc)

Where do I do this exactly? I know how to get into the BIOS but any idea of which tabs to look under?

I know how to disable turbo boost. I figured to keep c-states enabled(whatever they actually are). They sounded important.

I don't think you can overclock with the multiplier on your b150m motherboard, or even overclock your CPU. I'm pretty sure you can do some BLCK stuff but you need a Z170 motherboard for that.

Usually Intel has certain chipsets for OC's and unlocked cpu's for OC's. For all the 14nm CPU's its been Z motherboards and all core cpu's its had the K at the end.

Then I think my only option is to get turbo boost to function correctly. It seems my power plan is not letting it work like I want it to. When I set my max processor state to 99%, it then won't ever go over 2.7 GHz. And when I set it to 100%, it then stays at 3.2 GHz.

What do I set my power plan at and what do I set the min and max processor state to in order for it to start at around 2.7-2.8 GHz and go up to 3.2 GHz when needed? Isn't that what turbo boost is supposed to do?

You know now that I think about it, I think this is what my PC is doing. It's supposed to sit somewhere at 3.? ghz but it stays at 3.9ghz turbo. I honestly don't know what could be causing this, maybe something is wrong with the power delivery on your motherboard?

It's grayed out.

It's on all cores by default.

Is base clock not grayed out?

I did a quick google for "MSI B150M Boverclocking" and I found that it doesn't have multiplier overclocking, but it should have baseclock (which changes the frequency of the whole motherboard, not just the CPU)

If baseclock is there, great. Push it until you hit the 3.2Ghz minimum you're looking for. If it boots, great! Go back and try 3.4Ghz.

If it doesn't, lower your ram speed as changing the baseclock also changes the frequency of your ram.

Same goes for if it does boot and it doesn't when trying 3.4Ghz.  Just lower the ram speed. Then you should boot just fine.

Overclocking is a lottery, but a good rule is that /every/ intel chip will overclock to their max turbo speed on all cores & at the stock voltage absolutely fine. Just make sure you have adequate cooling and you're good to go!

A stress test at 3.4Ghz wouldn't be a bad idea to make sure your cooling and 3 year old CPU are upto the task :)

Edit: Intel spec sheet says max turbo is 3.4Ghz, just push the base clock until you hit that and lower your ram speed if you run into any problems along the way.

Wait, hold on. I didn't notice you have a P series processor.

They're not meant to be overclocked at all. Disable c-state, your PC will munch more power but it'll remain at the max frequency.

Nothing is wrong with the power delivery of the motherboard. What's causing it is the power plan. When you set the max processor state to 99%, it never goes over your base clock speed. When you set the max processor state to 100%(where yours is currently at probably, go check), it clocks your CPU at max turbo boost. Which is fine if you have an awesome cooler. I just bought my cooler to be better than stock cooling which would work great if I can figure out how to clock my CPU to 3.0 GHz.

11 hours ago, Chronified said:

I can already do this just by setting my max processor state to 100%. It then runs 4 core games at 3.2 GHz and 1-2 core games and Windows at 3.4 GHz. And as I explained, my cooler isn't the greatest to allow 3.2 GHz gaming for more than around 90 minutes. At least from my testing so far. It basically starts to get hot around the hour mark and game in the 60 degrees just fine but I want it in the 50's like I've always had it. 71 degrees is my max CPU temp. This is the first time in 2 years that my CPU has hit 60 degrees. Which is completely understandable now that my CPU is running at a constant 3.2 GHz.

Right now I'm stuck between gaming at 2.7 GHz(keeping turbo boost enabled and setting max pro speed at 99%), 2.8 GHz(disabling turbo boost and settings max pro speed at 100%) or 3.2 GHz(keeping turbo boost enabled and setting max pro speed at 100%). I want it to do what it's designed to do. Clock at 2.8 GHz and boost to 3.2 GHz when needed. My power plan does not allow it unless I can figure out how to set it a certain way. I'm missing something there. I feel that someone knows exactly what setting I'm looking for.

I just figured all this out yesterday. Exactly two years after I've been gaming at the 2.7 GHz it has always been set at. I never used to notice because I didn't used to monitor my CPU clock speed while gaming. I added that to my MSI AB monitoring like a week ago. I then noticed the 2708 MHz never change after playing multiple games and was like, why isn't it turbo boosting? It's because of that power plan max processor state.
