Will an external sound card help mic quality?

Hey guys, First time poster here. 

 

I have a decent headset and microphone with my HyperX KHX-H3CL, but people on Discord and Skype are always complaining about my mic quality and that it sounds "too staticky"  or saying "it has interference."

 

My only guess to what's causing this is my older motherboard and built in sound.  I've heard that external sound cards are supposed to help with overall sounds qualify, but would it also help with my microphone issues?  

I'd love any and all advice. Thanks!

I'd first try the headset on a variety of devices to make sure the on-board audio is the problem and not the headset.

Good idea! I tried my headset on my laptop and it seemed to work just fine. It looks like a PC issue, I just don't know if I need to replace the whole motherboard on my desktop or if I could fix my mic problems with a sound card instead.
