FRAPS-like program for Ubuntu

So I've been playing a few games on Ubuntu, and now I want to know if there's something like FRAPS for it. All I really want is a FPS counter. I could care less about recording.

So far I only have Vendetta Online installed, and I know it doesn't have a counter in it.

GLC is about as close as it gets to a FRAPS-like program with FPS counter.

I could only find Windows downloads for it. I don't think there was an Ubuntu one.

If you are using a 64 bit install then run this command in a terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:maarten-baert/simplescreenrecorder && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install simplescreen recorder simplescreenrecorder-lib:i386

This is a screen recorder and FPS counter? Just wanna make sure before I commit with a 112KB/s connection...

I tried Ubuntu 13.10 on my computer some time ago. The only thing that wouldn't work was nvidia drivers. When I installed them and rebooted I only got a black screen instead of the desktop. The cursor was there tho...

 

So what would you say gaming is like on ubuntu? Do the games run better or worse?

It really depends on the game. Some run terrible, some run great. Vendetta Online is a good example of a great runner, since I'm getting 10 or so more FPS than with Windows. But there are less games, especially on Steam, which kinda stinks. But hopefully with SteamOS that will change.

Yeah. SteamOS and new ubuntu LTS coming... 2014 could be a good year for linux gaming.
