Choosing a GPU for an old CPU

entredt

Hello! Helping a friend upgrade an old PC he is going to buy, wondering if this is a good gpu for the build:

Specs

CPU - i5-2400 @3.1Ghz

RAM - 8GB DDR3 @1333

The Mobo has a pcie 3 x16 slot in it

The graphics card I am planning on getting is an rx 570 4gb, would there be any major bottlenecks? thanks in advance!

Maybe a slight CPU bottleneck.

What are the prices on the system and the GPU?

The CPU will bottleneck the GPU some. If this was a 2600k, it would be fine, but its a 2400.

Thanks for the response!

My friend will be paying about 90 bucks on the system, and has a budget of around 200 for the gpu. however, i didnt really think that a GPU more powerful than an rx 570 would do much for him, so I chose that.

Aight, sounds good. would a rx5 560 be a better choice?

The 2400 is still a competent CPU. I have a 2500S (which is actually a little worse than a 2400) paired up with a 1050 Ti, and it works wonderfully.

If budget is a concern and your friend has a PSU with a 6/8-pin PCIe connector, a GTX 960 will give you very similar performance, especially if you get a 4GB model.

I agree with above of it being a bottleneck, but games are more reliant on the gpu than the cpu, sure he can gain 10-15 fps from a better cpu but he will gain the most from his gpu. With a budget that tight, he should have bought the best he could on black Friday or cyber Monday, because in terms of low end gpu's every dollar makes a difference in performance, so you want the best deal possible for the price. He can wait until Christmas sales or buy a used gpu, with the budget i see buying a used gpu as the better deal.
I recently got a used 1070 founders for 300.

1050Ti is a better bet than a 960

The 2GB model is within 10-15% of a 1050 Ti, and the 4GB version is within 10%. No question the 1050 Ti is better, but I just picked up a 2GB 960 off of eBay for $60. You're not going to find a 1050 Ti that works at that price. If budget is a pressure point, the 960 (or even the 760/770) starts to make sense.
