Hi everyone

Question: is there a way to somehow restore audio to video? I have a peer/student that recorded a video for a project that (supposedly) was recorded on a modern laptop and simply does not have audio attached. My hunch is that the microphone was not enabled in the Windows settings, but if there is some way to help I would certainly love to do so.

If audio was not recorded then how would you restore it...

Just create some out of thin air?

I am not sure if it was simply disabled somehow. From what I understand it was transferred from Windows -> Mac -> Converted/Compressed -> back to Windows. I'm proficient in tech to know it's not magic; there easily could have been something screwy that affected this video. I'd simply want to know if there are any ways to at least get it if it was recorded or verify that there is audio in the first place.

Well if you right click the file and go to properties you can see if there's audio in it.

If there is and you can't hear anything when you play the video then that means nothing was recorded.

Unless the audio was somehow recorded to a separate file, which some programs do, you can't get it back.

That said, if they were recorded as separate files, would they be saved in the same location? I concluded as much. The methods provided to this student in recording was obsolete and (honestly) wrong/insecure. If this cant be salvaged then I'll need to take the proper steps to address this later; which is why I ultimately ask this question.

Depends on the program, it's definitely possible that in some case the video file gets recorded to one directory and the audio file gets recorded to another.
