i9-9900k Temps

J-Dogg

straight to the point, i have a H150i Pro liquid cooler and a i9-9900k and it struggles to get idle (1-5%) under 40 degrees C i'm not 100% sure but to me that's a bit high for idle, playing gta 5 it only gets to about 30% - 40% usage and about 60 degrees C all 3 fans are on 1500RPM and the pump is 2700ish RPM. the case is the fractal define R6 and the Rad is mounted on the top with the fans pushing air out the top and the thermal paste is stock. i have heard things about the CPU lids not being flat preventing bad contact, and in order to rectify i would have to sand it, that is my worst case scenario. any other thoughts? thanks

only way to know if you need to LAP the IHS is to take the chip out clean it up and spin it on a flat surface. If it spins like a top, then it needs to be LAP'd. if it stops almost immediately, then its good.

Thats a good idea i'll give that a crack when i get a chance next, i will also apply some nicer thermal paste while i'm at it.

are u running an offset, what freq is the cpu running at idle, with an offset it should run at 0.6v 800mhz and idles at slightly higher than room temp.

The temp situation is overblown due to premature bios....and running prime fft (no need for that), anything under 85C is fine, the worst gaming probably won't surpass cinebench/blender temps.

It takes a bit of tuning but the 9900k thermals are better than a 8700k thats not delidded, went from not being able to hit 5ghz to ppl running 1.4v 5.2 just for gaming lol.

it appears to be idling at 4.6Ghz and 1.2V- 1.3V which i agree is unnecessary just to sit on the dekstop... should i do something about this? and is the fix a windows or bios one?

Edit - Motherboard is a Gigabyte Z390 Arorus Pro Wifi and i haven't done any bios updates to it.

bios, if you havent overclocked at all, just change your voltage mode from manual/auto to offset.

i wasn't able to do this as i'm too inexperienced to understand the vast amount of settings available on my motherboards bios, i might get in contact with gigabyte themselves or continue to research this as i find the time.

well, the 9900k is a hot cpu. temps seem fine to me

Actually, this seems a bit odd too me. I am also running the 9900K, in a corsair Carbide275R, a slightly smaller case than the R6 (I have the R5 too). With the side panels on, and on stock speeds with the smaller H115i Pro (on full speed pump and fans), I am getting just 30°C on idle, dipping below the 30° occasionally.

I am actually quite happy with these temps, I get to about 77°C with no OC in Cinebench (after 5 consecutive runs), on full speed fans.

However, I am extremely surprised at power draw with undervolting and underclocking the chip. I am getting 58° with a power draw of 115W on 4,5Ghz on all 8 cores.

when i set windows power mode to balanced and closed google chrome the clock speed goes from a solid 4.6Ghz to under 2.8Ghz which lowers the temperature to sit happily on 30C... So yeah its just Chrome being Chrome lol

Temps fine IMO. I have the i9 9900k overclocked to 5.0ghz on all cores at 1.4v. Idle 27-33c and one hour on Prime95 75-79c. I think I may have it 82c once during the hour. TJ max (thermal limit) is around 100c so if your sitting at 30c idle dont sweat it...pic is idle at a random moment while Chrome is open.

,

the launch temps were way overblown, with the latest bios on the taichi i got 100 more mhz to 5.2, just gotta be careful not to run p95 FFT on that lol... also have a downvolted profile at 4.9 1.2v for a power draw of 130w~ on cinebench, gaming never goes above 95w.

i tried running aida64 and after 5 minutes it thermal throttled to by 10% and was in the high 90's to 100's C the whole time, this was after i tested the IHS re applied a generous amount of Arctic MX-2 thermal paste and made sure the cooling block was tight and im only running on stock clock speeds and voltages. not really sure what to do now other than attempt to lower the clock speeds and make it perform worse but expand its life span.
