Is the extended height of two large tophats worth being able to watercool? Stick with air cooling??

 

I don't think I will be able to run 9900K on air in that case so factor that into decision.

Water: 9900K

I'd go for air. A full custom loop is a massive pain in the ass to install, plus an 8700K will be fine. 9900K + full custom loop is just plain overkill.

Unless you're editing very high quality video footage or doing some serious CAD stuff, I highly doubt an 8700K will struggle to do what you want it to do.

Although the Ghost has more clearance to accommodate bigger air coolers than the A4-SFX for example, the space available is still not big enough for coolers that support the TDP of top-of-the-line Intel CPU's.  Any SFF compatible cooler that fits SFF cases is just not powerful enough to cool high i7 or i9 chips. 

 

I couldn't keep my 7700K in my A4-SFX v1 and 8700K in my A4-SFX v2 cool without disabling all the turbo stuff or even downclocking or undervolting. What is even the point in running a K chip when you can't let it loose.

 

I can however keep my 8700K at stock speeds cool "enough' with the Asetek 545LC in my A4-SFX v2.

 

For my Ghost (that'll hopefully arrive soon) I have bought a Asus ROG Ruyjin 240 AIO cooler, this will fit nicele in the L top-hat.  The pump is 70mm high, so I'll need to run it:

- without a sidepanel

- without the RGB cap 

- design custom plexiglass sidepanels with a cutout for the pump on the CPU.

 

When my Ghost arrives, I'll be sure to create a build log here

Opinions on water cooling using this rad in the top? Built in reservoir which would probably be better solution than Jay's. Water cooling I would go with 9900K. I think I could get a 9700K to run on a modded NH-L12 (Put 120mm slim on the bottom instead of 92mm).
