Need the best bang for buck commodity laptop

So my dad has been using my old Hp Envy 17-J027CL for a while now and somehow the man managed to smash the lcd this morning, like wtf, it never leaves his desk...

 

Anyways, repairs stores are saying they don't stock that laptop's particular display and the replacements on-line are like 150-200 CAD, combine that with 50/hr CAD repair work, that seems pretty expensive to fix up an old device like this.

 

So I need some recommendations for the best commodity laptop I can buy, all my dad does is Word, Powerpoint, email etc. I'm also willing to go second hand too. Locations: Vancouver Canada

Have you checked for replacement displays on ebay?

If you find a nice one, you can fix it by yourself, it's not hard.

I didn't find any available, although I'm not sure if there are different models of displays that would work in my particular laptop.
