What counts as OS maintenance?

As the title says I don't know what falls into this category, I have to write an  essay for school. I don't know what falls into this category because in my country there isn't much information on the topic.

Make sure you don't install unnecessary bloatware on it, only install what you actually use.

 

Only let running on background what you actually use.

 

That's if any thing a good start. Stuff like "registry cleaners" and what not usually do more harm than good and should be avoided.

Do anti virus programs count as maintenance?

Only good ones like Kaspersky and NOD32, free antivirus usually are useless and will consume excessive system resources.

Updates also count as maintenance imo. Remember to regularly empty your trash, too!
