Screen and secondary monitors stay off on boot (laptop)

Hello Linus Tech Tips,

 

I was wondering if you could help me diagnose a hardware problem on my laptop.
I run Ubuntu 18.04 on a Asus SC56 laptop.

I was just doing some web browsing when my laptop completely froze after a few minutes. It happened two or three time after hard reboots. 
The third time, when I rebooted, the computer turned on (fans whirring and lights on), but the screen stayed completely off. I tried plugging a second monitor and nothing showed up on it. I tried the keyboard shortcuts for dimmness and secondary monitor display mode to no avail.

Any ideas? I happen to have a second laptop which is identical appart from a broken screen, so I can swap some things around, even though its tougher on laptops.
