Advice on laptop choice

My friend asked me for advice on a good student laptop but I'm a bit behind on laptops and the information online is muddy. She is not taking anything that requires rendering or excess CPU performance but has a roughly $1000 CAD budget, she probably won't be doing any kind of hard gaming so I guess something with a nice keyboard, good display, good sound, battery, build. You know. Help a brother out.

if it's a student machine get one half the price . 500$

it'll get dropped , beat on , stolen , stuff dumped on it. breaking a 500$ laptop isn't as bad as breaking a 1000$ laptop , plus you'll have 500 left over to pay the massive amount of bills and expenses you will rack up

She really has no specifics but the battery would ideally be good for Atleast seven hours, and a good display is great but if it impedes everything else I'm sure she can live with lower quality. I think this will be her first computer

But the only difference I can see is i5 vs i7 and it seems worth 50 to upgrade to i7 for future proofing
