Can you solder on higher capacity vram chips?

Say if I were to buy an old GTX 680, and I liked the performance of it, but didn't like the lack of VRAM, if I were to know what I was doing, were to have sourced the proper vram chips that would be able to solder onto the board, and then soldered them, would that be a way of increasing the VRAM, or would that brick the card? or would it -work- but only have the amount it had before due to the drivers not supporting more? and if that last one is the case, would I be able to make a custom BIOS and custom driver for it if I had the proper knowledge? Not planning on doing this AT ALL, I just thought this up and know that its at least semi doable.

you can, but the bios may not support more than what is available

Most gpu scam used GTX 460 as the base card, then they modify the device signature in the firmware.

Newer cards have locked firmware i think thats why we don't see gpu scam using more than 4xx base.

They can be use a GPU with ... 2 GB of VRAM, and flash the vBIOS to say ... 12GB of VRAM.

The problem is when the GPU TRIES to use more than 2 GB ... things break.
