Home security sysem

Can anyone recommend a security system?

I'm thinking a wireless system that is cloud based, so that any power or internet interruption won't disable it, but I am open to suggestions.  I have a computer on 24/7 so I could run something from it, but I'm not sure this is the best way to go.  I would only need 3 cameras (front, door, and rear) so I don't think I need to spend a ton on this, but I have never had a home security system before.

Thanks.

I like ZoneMinder on any old PC.

Connects to USB cameras, IP cameras, just about anything you can put on a network.

Your only limit to how much is saved is how much hard drive you install.

But I'd still have the issues with Power and internet outage, right.  Plus, from the distance between cameras will be about 100 feet.

Power - Get a UPS for the computer, and use battery powered WiFi-based IP cameras.

As for internet, if your home internet goes out, you're SOL with any solution, lol.  Unless you find a setup that uses cellular service.

Can you run it on a Ras PI?

Hmm, I'm betting the answer is yes, but I haven't looked to see if it's been able to be compiled on ARM.

I use a dell celeron desktop from 2006, with four USB-based cameras, a 4tb SATA HDD, and haven't ever had an issue.  I can save about a month of footage at 720p

Yep, works on Pi.  You'd want a very large USB HDD for saving footage, though.

A large piece of paper on your front door that says

"Barb, don't come in, the Cobra's gotten loose again and I can't find him."

Then post a note on your local CL or NextDoor site saying something like "My Cobra is missing, I"m pretty sure he's in the house, but in case you see him, please let me know."

Works like a charm. I lived a few years ago in a *very* dicey area, constant break-ins, thefts, etc (I was just divorced, no money for a better place) and I did this, and was never bothered the entire time I lived there...

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Hmmm.  When I think about the saving footage part, I realize I would want cloud based and hand held device enabled, so my wife and kids could check it on phones etc.  I should do some research on this beyond a forum post.  Thanks for the help!

You can do that with Zoneminder.  You don't *need* to save the footage.  But, if someone actually breaks in, you would *really want* saved footage.

With four cameras, a 100gb drive would be more than enough for a day or two.

But where would the footage be stored if not on site?

There are options to integrate ZM with AWS for cloud based storage, but it's really best to just keep it on site, tbh.  You can view it from your mobile devices from anywhere as long as there is internet.

I'm being a little curious at that point since I'm looking to build a similar system *on a budget*, too. What type of cameras are you using? Old PC Webcams?

I use these, with active extenders.

There are plenty of options including some really nice high end solutions, however, if you want something good and cheap, I'd suggest checking out these YI Home Cameras. 1080p video, wireless, footage can be stored locally on an SD card, you can view live or past footage from your phone, and a cloud service is completely optional. The best part is they are around $30 each. Essentially Nest Cams for less than 1/5 the price.

When I first discovered these cameras I didn't expect much for the price. I have used and setup a dozen of these over the last 1-2 years and I continue to be pleasantly surprised with how well they work. Three cameras plus SD cards would be under $125.
