just dont scale down please.. it will look like shit

dropping the quality settigs of the game is a way better idea

Edit: also dont buy a 1080p 27" monitor.. the pixel density gets way too low imo

Games set to 1080p on a 1440p screen look really bad.

It will look a lot better if you settle for Medium settings instead of 1080p High/Ultra.

And you will actually be able to play at 100FPS+ in most games on Medium, not all of them though.

And e-sport games will run just fine at High/Ultra even with GTX 980 if you want to push 120FPS+

Alternatively... you can use the 1080p Ultrawide custom resolution in game (2560x1080) for better performance but you will have black bars like in a movie on top and bottom of the screen.

It depends how you scale.

If you want the whole screen to be filled, each pixel on the monitor will be trying to display the information of slightly more than one pixel of 1080p. This will make the image blurry, and look worse than just a 1080p monitor.

If you want 1:1 pixel mapping, where each monitor pixel corresponds to one pixel of 1080p content, the image will be sharp, but you'll only user the middle of the screen; the whole image will be smaller.

The 980 might struggle a bit at 1440p. You might be able to get by at lower settings though.
