Help deciding

Hello everyone and anyone!

I’ve been a long time desktop user and haven’t really worried about getting a decent laptop till now. I’ve gotten a new job and will be moving to a home with less space, unfortunately not enough space for my computer. So my GF will be taking care of my PC till she can eventually join me later in the year.

Anyway, point is, I am in the market for a new gaming laptop and while I have been looking around a little, I have not decided yet and would like some ideas from you. 9_9 Before I list some preferences it’s worth saying that the place I’ll be going to provide a discount on Dell hardware, but I’m not overly struck on the big clunky aesthetics.

I am looking to spend around £1800 GBP for ideally a gaming laptop with portability in mind. This has made me think of the Razer blades but I’m not 100% sold on them and want to know my options first. I’m not overly fussed on the specs but I like to futureproof a little, (which is difficult with no upgradability normally) and for the money and gaming it should have in the region of:

  • Atleast i5 but really should be an i7 for the money
  • atleast 16GB of RAM
  • GTX 1060 minimum
  • 500GB storage minimum (PCIE minimum but M.2 probably ideal), ideally 1TB.

Also to consider:

  • Touchscreen, 2 in 1 functionality and decent webcam are all pluses.
  • Portability, I don’t want a laptop with bigger radiators than my car.

So what would you recommend? Thanks in advance!

Rob

Wait for more CFL-H laptops like Clevo P950EP6/P950ER and MSI new GS/GE Raider. If you can find a Zephyrus M (not to be confused with the old Zephyrus) within your budget then it can be a good buy too, just be aware of the poor battery life. RAM and storage can be added after purchase if the warranty allows.

You won't find a 2 in 1 with touchscreen and GTX 1060 unless someone makes a new model.

Avoid Razer laptops, terrible quality, terrible QC and customer support.

1-2 weeks for selected models. Other models need to wait a few months. Examples are the ones I listed above.

just have to play the waiting game till they’re available in the UK, the MSI GS65 seems interesting too but I cannot find these being sold in the UK anywhere yet it’s quite annoying.

MSI GS65

No proper reviews yet. From early verdicts: chassis has too much flex, cooling is questionable.

MSI new GS/GE Raider

Look for Notebookcheck and Ultrabookreview on GS63VR. However I strongly suggest Clevo P950EP6/P950ER over this.

I’m very interested at the gm501 especially because of the performance and cooling  over the other coffee lake laptop’s (gs65,Aero 15x etc..)

Btw about the 2hour battery life, you can buy a laptop power bank for it, I found a 88wh battery pack in amazon with an ac outlet

Cooling in thin gaming laptops is pretty much the same. Throttle under full load. Hotter inner temps, hotter surface temps and louder fan noise while under load compared to a bulky gaming laptop with 'proper' cooling system. The Zephyrus M do a better job compared to most competitors since it can be equipped with a full blown 1070N GPU.
