2 or 4 gb's of ram?

Go to solution Solved by Energycore,

2GB is the bare minimum to run the OS at all, so do go with 4.

Hello, I am building a budget file server and was wondering if I should go for 2gb's of ddr3 or 4gb's. The server will only be running Ubuntu Server edition and there are only 4 machines that will be connected to it at any point. The reason I'm asking is that I have all the parts except for ram and need to know if I should take 2 or 4gb's out of my current main system.

I feel like you could get by with 2 since my rp3 runs Linux and uses like 300 MB with just the OS lol but I would advise 4 since you don't want to constrain yourself unnecessarily.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Sounds good, thanks! I may end up starting with 2 and seeing if it works or not!
