Update b350-f gaming

Ok so long story short I am unable to flash my bios in my Asus right Strix b350-f, I have renamed the .cap file appropriately and the best I can get aside from not a bios file error is failed read error, I have already rma'd one board for this issue and fear I may have to rma this one as well unless someone can help me update the bios.

I've double checked the files I'm using tried older and newer bios versions after bios version 1001 that is in the board currently, I've tried different USB sticks in different USB ports formatted differently and everything I can think of. Manufacturer is of no use they just say renamed .cap file and update via usb. And rma if that doesn't work but surely there is some other way I can do this myself.

Please help!

Why do you need to rename the file? With Asus boards in my experience you just unzip the folder, put It in a FAT32 USB and then start the update with ezflash

You shouldn't need to rename the BIOS file unless you are using ASUS's USB BIOS Flashback feature -- it doesn't look like the B350-F GAMING have that ability.

Instructions on how to update the BIOS should in in the motherboard manual, pages 3-21 to 3-24 (looking at the manual online).

Typically, you would update the BIOS using the "ASUS EZ Flash 3" method.

As @mbox stated, make sure the USB stick is reformatted to FAT32, instead of NTFS.

Download the BIOS file, and extract/unzip it. You cannot update the BIOS using it's .zip form.

Copy the unzipped .CAP file into the USB stick.

Then...

Quote
  1. Enter the Advanced Mode of the BIOS setup program. Go to the Tool menu to select EZ Flash Utility and press <Enter>.
  2. Insert the USB flash disk that contains the latest BIOS file to the USB port.
  3. Select via Storage Devices.
  4. Press <Tab> to switch to the Drive field.
  5. Press the Up/Down arrow keyst o find the USB flash disk that contains the latest BIOS, and then press <Enter>.
  6. Press <Tab> to switch to the Folder Info field.
  7. Press teh Up/Down arrow keys to find the BIOS file, and then press <Enter> to perform the BIOS update process. Reboot the system when the update process is done.

See if this helps:

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3462858/bios-update-ryzen.html

Also format your USB flash drive with Rufus and set the partition scheme to GPT for UEFI with fat 32.

just tried format with rufus and still same error, gonna try other dos method in a sec

tried dos method, displays error "failed to load secure bios"

gonna try without renaming and update again

welp did that too and exact same error, maybe i have to find a way to turn off secure bios? i dunno im so grasping at straws now

Are you sure you are getting a "failed to load secure bios" message, or is it "failed to load secure boot" ?

Totally missed the part where you need to re-name the BIOS file -- for your particular board. That was my bad.

Is your USB stick detected in BIOS?

Are you able to post some screenshots of your current BIOS settings?

BTW you can take screenshots while IN BIOS.

Plug in your USB stick...and press the F12 key on your keyboard to take a screenshot.

I'll check the BIOS setting(s) on my ASUS motherboards, and see if I can get some clues.

uld it be possible a bad cpu is stopping bios update?

There could be a chance, but it's quite small.

On Intel, it could be a bent CPU pin on the motherboard socket, but that issue is less likely on AMD.

I actually went to update my own motherboard's BIOS, so I got a chance to check everything...and do some quick comparisons between your settings and mine.

Both ASUS motherboard by the way.

Only difference I see is in the BOOT section.

This is what I have:

  • Platform Key (PK) state -- Loaded
  • OS Type -- Windows UEFI Mode

I grabbed some screenshots of my BIOS as well, so just doing a side-by-side comparison.

just for shits and giggles i changes CSM to  look like this (attachment)

also tried to update bios before and after csm changes via freedos method and in bios method with easy flash 3 and still nothing

the reason i asked about a bad CPu is currently im having issues with a display driver crashing(ive tried multiple gpu's and still get the error and since the motherboard was rma'd once already i believe the display driver crash is not related to motherboard, gpu, ssd, ram(since ram is on QVL) so i believe it has to be the CPU causing the error

after swapping out ram via ramtest and swapping out cpu's (ryzen 1600 - ryzen 1700) and clearing everybit of cmos and bios settings ive determined the issue is with the motherboard itself and was likely returned the same motherboard after i rma'd it to newegg, so ive bought a new motherboard(amazon to ensure different batches) arrives wednesday, will update then to see how i make out updating bios if need be, if i still have issues it would have to be SSD or GPU incompatability(but likely not gpu as i have swapped it out with a perfectly fine one and still had issues)
