Which editing software should I use?

So I'm looking for an editing software. Which one should I get?

Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Premiere, Davinci Resolve, Vegas Pro? Any others? And what are their advantages?

How long is a piece of string?

Each of them, their strengths and weaknesses, depend almost entirely on what you plan on editing.

If, for example, you are a professional Hollyweird filmmaker, anythign less than Adobe or Final Cut, is unacceptable.

If you are editing you skateboard home movies, any will do.

The learning curves on all of them are steep. Pick one you can afford, and go to town. If you outgrow its capability, then you're ready to move on to the next level in an editing career

Let me put it another way, I make movies that I sell, for real money.

I use the built-in Windows 7 movie maker, because it does what I need to do, for the style of films I make (fashion art nude work)

It's by no means competitive to those you listed, but it has everything I need, so I stick with it.

And wat system do you have? if you got mac just use Final Cut becas its free (i think) and wudt recruitment using Davinci Resolve

I use Vegas and can say it's good. Can recommend it for sure, takes a while to get used to but a lot easier than Adobe Premiere I think

It's not free. OP use Premiere if you don't have a mac. It's one of the best out there under the sub multi thousand dollar mark like Avid

So none of these are good. You need a big answer.

 

I shoot and edit wedding videos. It's my second job and I have gotten VERY familiar with most editing programs. I have used Resolve, FCPX & Premiere equally as I have tried to find the best option for editing speed and workflow improvements.

 

I'm gonna make a pros and cons for each.

 

FCPX

Pros:

- Excellent starter app. It is very easy to learn and use and it is by far the most modern editor on the market.

- This Guy Edits did a great review of how Final Cut Pro X is better: 

- Organization system is levels above anything else right now

- If you are on a mac, it uses black magic to get so fast. I don't understand it, I was editing on a 2011 13" Macbook Pro and it was like butter. I had 512MB of VRAM and it was better than premiere. It was uncanny. It is so amazingly optimized for Apple hardware.

- I paid the 300$ like 5 years ago, and then didn't touch it for a few years, but still got all the great updates for it. It's a one time thing. It's awesome.

- There is a large plugin market available.

 

Cons:

- Apple only

- With it being a modern interface, some things are... weird. Especially if you are used to using another piece of editing software.

- There is barely any integration with 3rd part apps. Let's be real, no one uses Apple Motion, After Effects is superior by far, but there is no way to link files from one to the other. This makes the pipeline if you want to add good effects to your shots tedious.

- Audio manipulation is less than stellar, not as much fine tuning as I would like.

- If you don't like the keyword organization system, your boned.

- Apple kind of does whatever it wants, it's annoying at times because features you want don't really happen as you want. That being said, I would argue that they are the only software group that is actively trying to make editing better, even if it means learning to do things differently.

- Color grading leaves something to be desired. 

 

 

PREMIERE PRO

Pros: 

- The strongest all around editor right now for small time editors to big studios(we won't talk about Avid).

- Huge marketplace and plugin availability.

- Edit audio in Adobe Audition, do effects in AE with dynamic link. The new motion graphics and essential audio panels are incredible.

- If you pay for the whole adobe subscription, you get everything you need to do more with premiere, be it design graphics or photoshop images or what have you if you want to go full tilt into this crazy world(kinda recommended but not at the same time).

- It's a traditional editor with a lot of new features which is fantastic.

- Lumetri is getting better and better with each release. I have no reason to grade in another software.

 

Cons:

- Monthly subscription. It's not worth it if you aren't making money off of what you are doing.

- Premiere is becoming extremely bloated. Older machines get left in the dust VERY quickly here. 

- Taran has noted it's incredible amount of bugs and problems he has had with premiere. So there's that.

- It has increasingly relied on single core performance and GPU related rendering which makes investing in the system I have (5820k 6 core system), seem like a useless purchase.

- Binning is horrible, it's time consuming and there is no good other method for organizing footage.

- Feature creep is becoming a big problem with Premiere with each subsequent release, making the app slower but not really giving any new great tools.

 

DAVINCI RESOLVE(This is the app I have used the least so forgive the shorter list)

Pros:

- FREE for 1080p!

- A nice hybrid between FCPX and PP.

- When you are done editing you can grade your footage right away and davinci is just beautiful for grading them footys.

- From my knowledge, it's effects and plugins are small, but powerful.

 

Cons:

- If you aren't doing high end grading for this, it's kind of hard to justify using as it is really meant for making minor adjustments to your timeline before you grade, not as much as a full on editor(in my opinion).

- You basically have to have a gpu to use this software, which kind of sucks, an integrated gpu is not really supported(at least it wasn't when I wanted to use it).

- It's kind of expensive to move up when you get started with 4k content.

 

In regards to Sony Vegas, I would only recommend getting it if none of these are appealing to you. If you are on a mac, pony up and spend the money on FCPX instead of using Vegas(does it even run of mac?).

 

What's really cool is how competitive the world of editors has become, it's awesome. It means that all of these pieces of software are competing to be the standard for what people use, it's great for the consumer because we just keep getting better and better software.

 

I hope this helps. I wanted this to be a bit more comprehensive compared to what everyone has said.

 

What I use.

 

I use Premiere Pro. But I also can pay for the entire suite because I get paid to shoot and edit weddings(not super easy money but easier money than film production). I have gotten very comfortable using it but my heart longs to use FCPX because of it's keywording system and optimization, but my assistant editor only knows Premiere so I keep to what everyone else is using.

Thats wrong, you can do up to 4K in the free version.
And the studio version is a 299 $ one time payment.

They are all different and I would recommend spending time working with all of them to find what you're most comfortable with.  If you are starting out I would recommend trying HitFilm free, it has a good suite of features available with plenty of tutorials to get started.  The free version is fairly capable and more advanced features can be purchased for low cost (between $10 and 50) to suit your expanding needs for a while.

 

The latest version of Resolve has put a lot more into the edit and audio areas to make it a much more well rounded NLE than before and can do more than HitFilm but it comes with a higher learning curve.

 

People will rave about After Effects and other pro-grade editors, but the truth is if you are not working on very advanced features you will be better off with something else.  All of these options are tools for video creation, and like everything you want to pick the right tool for the job.  Give them all a try and see which one is the right tool.
