How exactly does Facebook track your activity outside of the app?

So a couple of weeks ago I was browsing Redbubble looking for T-shirt’s with Grim Fandango designs.  I did this on my iPad using either Chrome or Safari.  I had never logged into Facebook in either of those browsers before.  Today when using the Facebook app, on the same iPad, I suddenly got an ad for Redbubble and T-shirt’s with Grim Fandango designs.  How does Facebook do that?

So let's say you use google. They record what you searched up, and sells that data to another company for money. In this case, that's facebook. Or some place using google ads will use that data. Facebook has that data, and will serve you those ads.

The same way that Google knows that you shop at Publix, enjoy Autozone, and went to eat at the Melting Pot last Saturday.

Hm, I didn’t realize data was that detailed. When I hear about companies collecting data, it’s always about them collecting anonymous data. Usually to improve their products. This have had to have my name or IP address or something like that attached to it.

Their product also includes services such as marketing.

I haven’t noticed that google knows that sort of stuff. Is that something I should have noticed even though I’m using an iPhone without Chrome on it?

I don't think you're going to have to worry unless you use Google services, but Facebook does track where you go, what pages you visit on FB, and will target you with relevant ads (us guys need those 10-inch heels, amirite?).

Facebook (and Google) use cookies on devices when available, track through ANY apps they create, and any site that uses either Facebook or Google's advertising service will let the ad service track your activity on that site.
