Disk Array Suggestions

Hi all,

I'm going to be building a NAS/Plex/HTPC server with future tinkering in mind.

I have purchased 2 x 500GB SSDs and 8 x 4TB NAS HDDs.

I am planning on using the 2 SSDs in Soft-RAID1 and will be installing Ubuntu Server. It will also host all docker installations, like Plex, and VMs, specifically Windows 10 for Media playback, etc.

As for the 8x4TB drives, I am not sure which route to go. I have read about mergefs+SnapRAID configurations, ZFS, and RAID6.

I'm also fairly new to Linux and have little knowledge, so simple setup and minimal management will be a plus.

Most data stored will be static, but will be adding files pretty frequently (2-3 video files daily).

Also, the ease of adding more drives in the future will need to considered.

Which disk array should I use for the 8x4TB drives?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Are you sure you want a RAID 0 boot/OS drive? If one of those SSDs fails or goes a bit odd everything will be lost on that RAID array and you'll have to rebuilding everything. Probably too late now but a single 1TB SSD would have been better, less chance of failure.

You could use ZFS, btrfs or mdadm, you planning on adding more disks to the array at a later date?

Edit:

Durp adding more drives was mentioned.

ZFS can be a little bit of a pain to add disks to i.e. just 1. BTRFS might be the best choice depending on other factors like what you are going to use to host VMs and containers.

Hi leadeater, sorry for the confusion. I meant to say Soft-RAID1 for OS.

As for the VMs and containers, it will be hosted on the RAID1 SSDs.

I'll do some digging on BTRFS.

Thanks for the suggestion.
